The #12 ranked Baylor Bears travel to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the #15 ranked Oklahoma Sooners in what could be a high scoring Big 12 conference affair. Baylor won last year’s tilt 41–12 in Waco.

#10 Notre Dame at #9 Arizona State (-2.5, 60) 3:30 PM ABC

#10 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish will look to stay in the hunt for a national championship playoff berth when they had to Tempe, Arizona to take on the #9 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. The Sun Devils survived last Saturday with a 16–13 overtime victory over Utah.

#23 West Virginia (-3, 51.5) at Texas 3:30 PM FOX Sports 1

The #23 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns. The Mountaineers will be looking to rebound from a heartbreaking 31–30 loss to TCU. The Longhorns got back into the win column last Saturday defeating Texas Tech 34-13.

Virginia at #2 Florida State (-20, 55.5) 6:30 PM ESPN

Florida State escaped defeat with a 42–31 win over Louisville last Thursday. They’ll face another stout defense in Virginia who will be looking to rebound off a 35–10 loss to Georgia Tech last Saturday.

#7 Kansas State at #6 TCU 7:30 PM FOX

The tough tests for #6 ranked TCU seems like it never ends. They’ll take on their fifth ranked opponent in six weeks when they take on the #7 ranked Kansas State Wildcats, whose only loss was at the hands of #3 ranked Auburn.

#5 Alabama at (-6.5, 45.5) #16 LSU 8:00 PM CBS

The #5 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide take on the #16 ranked LSU Tigers from death Valley in Baton Rouge. These two teams have had memorable games in the past and with the way both teams are playing, this year should be no different.

#14 Ohio State at #8 Michigan State (-3.5, 57.5) 8:00 PM ABC

The #14 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes travel to East Lansing to take on the #8 ranked Michigan State Spartans in a key Big Ten clash. The Spartans defeated the buckeyes in the Big Ten championship last season 34–24.

#4 Oregon (-8, 60) at #17 Utah   10:00 PM ESPN

The #4 ranked Oregon Ducks got the monkey off their back last Saturday with a dominating win over Stanford. They will now have to refocus as they travel to Salt Lake City to take on the #17 ranked Utah Utes, who have one of the best defensive lines in the country.

#20 Ohio State at Maryland 12:00 PM (EST) ABC

The Maryland Terrapins, a new comer to the Big Ten, will look to make it 3 straight wins when they host the #20 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Maryland got a nice road win in Indiana last Saturday, while the Buckeyes defeated Cincinnati 50-28.

#3 Alabama (-6) at #11 Ole Miss 3:30 PM (EST) CBS

The #11 Ole Miss Rebels will host the #3 Alabama Crimson Tide in a highly anticipated SEC contest.

It will most likely be the biggest game in recent history for #11 Mississippi when they host #3 ranked Alabama. Alabama handled the Rebels last season, winning 25-0 in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide were idle last weekend, while Ole Miss defeated Memphis 24-3.

#4 Oklahoma (-4) at #25 TCU 3:30 PM (EST) FOX

The #4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners are ranked 25th in the country in total offense. That offense will be tested when they take on #25 ranked TCU, who are second in the nation in total defense, allowing just 2187.y yards per contest.

#14 Stanford (-1.5) at #9 Notre Dame 3:30 PM (EST) NBC

The Notre Dame fighting Irish will face their stiffest test this season when they host the #14 ranked Stanford Cardinal. The two teams are in the top 5 in scoring defense, with Stanford at #1 (6.5 ppg) and Notre Dame at #4 (11.5).

The #15 ranked LSU Tigers take on the #5 Auburn Tigers in a key SEC contest. Both teams had a relatively easy test in week 5, with LSU defeating New Mexico St. 63-7 and Auburn defeating Louisiana Tech 45-17.

Saturday, September 6th

#4 Oklahoma (-24) at Tulsa 12:00 pm EST

The #4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners will travel to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane. The Sooners took care of business last week, as the defense put forth a dominating effort in a 48-16 win. Tulsa got some revenge against Tulane, winning 38-31 in double overtime in what was one of the more entertaining games of week 1.

Florida Atlantic at #2 Alabama (-41) 12:00PM EST 

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take on Florida Atlantic in their home opener.  Alabama had their hands full with West Virginia, winning 33-23. Florida Atlantic was not as successful last weekend, losing at Nebraska 55-7, where they only registered 13 first downs against the Cornhuskers.

#15 USC at #11 Stanford (-3.5) 3:30 PM EST

The #15 USC Trojans take on the #11 Stanford Cardinal in what will be a pivotal matchup in the PAC-12. Stanford has beaten USC in 5 of the last 7 meetings. With Steve Sarkisian at the helm for Stanford, it can only make this rivalry even better. Both teams won their week 1 games rather easily, with Stanford defeating UC-Davis 45-0, and USC defeating Fresno State 52-13. USC unveiled a new up-tempo offense last week, but Stanford’s defense has been known to deal with it quite well in the past. This should be a great matchup.

#8 Michigan State at #3 Oregon (-13) 7:30 PM EST

A fast paced up-tempo offense takes on one of the better defenses in the nation as the Oregon Ducks host the Michigan State Spartans in what will be the marquee game of the weekend. Oregon has had its share of difficulties against stellar defenses in prior seasons, and the defending Rose Bowl champions out of the Big Ten have just that. National championship implications will most definitely be at stake in this one.

Michigan (-17.5) vs #17 Notre Dame 7:30 pm EST

The Michigan Wolverines take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in one of the better rivalries in college football. The Wolverines have won 4 out of the last 5 matchups, and won last year’s matchup 41-30.  Michigan didn’t overlook Appalachian State last weekend, winning 52-14. Everett Golson made his return to last weekend, leading the Irish to a 48-17 victory over Rice.

The 2013 NCAA Tournament continues on Friday night in the Midwest Region, where the Duke Blue Devils and the Michigan State Spartans are going to renew what has become a very important rivalry over the course of the last few years. Head Coach Tom Izzo’s Spartans are the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region, and they are lined in what basically is a pick ’em game against the No. 2 seeded Blue Devils, who have to still feel slighted over the fact that they aren’t on the top line in the dance.

Key #1: Ryan Kelly needs to make his first legitimate appearance of the tourney
It’s clear that when the Blue Devils are at their best, Ryan Kelly is at his best as well. This is a man that is going to be a matchup nightmare for the significantly less athletic Spartans to try to handle if he gets going. Kelly is every bit of 6’11”, and he can step back from the outside and knock down some big time shots. However, Kelly has gone four straight games now, scoring a total of just 25 points in those outings, and that’s just not good enough at this level for a team that is expected to challenge for a spot in the Final Four this week. If Kelly is hitting his shots, either F Adreian Payne or F Derrick Nix is going to have to step out and try to guard him on the perimeter, and if that turns out to be the case, the battle on the glass is going to be won by the Dookies in easy form. Kelly really didn’t have to exist against Albany or Creighton because those teams weren’t going to challenge F Mason Plumlee on the glass anyway, but if Kelly can’t step back and draw a defender away from the basket, Plumlee could have some problems.

Key #2: Keith Appling’s shoulder had better be good to go
The Spartans have put together two very impressive games here in the dance, but there is a big, big difference between playing against Memphis, playing against Valpo, and playing against Duke. The Blue Devils have legitimate NBA-type talent from one to five in this lineup, and there is no doubt that they are going to be in it for the full 40 minutes. That means that the Spartans have to be playing at full strength as well, and that might be a tad difficult. Appling hurt his shoulder in the win over Memphis on Saturday, and he ended that game with just two points, two assists, and a rebound. Granted, others like G Gary Harris were able to pick up the slack at that point for Sparty, but we just don’t know if there is enough talent here on this team to come up with a big time effort against the Blue Devils to carry the load for a player that might be carrying an injury.

Key #3: The Dookies have to be ready to get down and dirty
The one thing about the ACC this season is that there really weren’t a lot of teams that willingly played the knock down, drag out games that the NCAA Tournament is known for. This is where we are going to learn a heck of a lot about Duke and its prospects of not just winning this game, but its chances of winning the whole enchilada as well. When you really look at the games that the Blue Devils played this year, they really weren’t forced into a lot of half-court type of games. The Virginia Cavaliers did it to the Dookies in Charlottesville, and the hosts won that game 73-68. Duke does have a win over the Ohio State Buckeyes to its credit as well from back in November of the same caliber, but that game was a long time ago, and obviously, OSU is a heck of a lot better now than it was before. However, with so many great teams that could play some big time defense left in the dance, the Blue Devils are going to need to prove that they can play this gritty type of game if they are going to win and be successful.

Key #1: Gary Patterson has to stick to his winning ways
Since 2002, the Horned Frogs have gone a whopping 7-2 in bowl games, and the only losses came in the 2003 Fort Worth Bowl and the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, both of which came against the Boise State Broncos. We have already seen what TCU can do against a Big Ten team, beating up the Wisconsin Badgers 21-19 in a defensive-minded Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day 2011 as well. What’s more about this team is that its defense is always ready for a fight. In the last seven bowl games, which have yielded a 6-1 record, the team hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in any of the games, and it has allowed an average of just 17.1 points per game in that stretch to boot. Add in the fact that the Horned Frogs would have ranked in the Top 10 in the nation defensively had they played in any other conference in America, and it is clear to see that this unit is the glue for the team and will remain the key to beating the Buffalo Wild Wings betting lines and continuing this great tradition of bowl victories for the men clad in purple and black.

Key #2: Le’Veon Bell has to keep the ball out of Andrew Maxwell’s hands
It’s a tough thing to try to say that a quarterback just has to not throw the football, but the best things that happen to this Michigan State offense all happen with RB Le’Veon Bell carrying the ball. Maxwell put the pill in the air 431 times this year, which just isn’t going to cut it against a TCU defense that is one of the better units in America. He averaged just 6.0 yards per pass attempt, completed 52.9 percent of his passes, and threw just over one touchdown per game on average. Bell on the other hand, had 1,648 rushing yards and 11 TDs, and he averaged touching the football 31.7 times per game, making him a true horse for the offense. Just over the course of the last three games of the regular season, Bell had 35, 32, and 36 carries, and he had well over 500 rushing yards in those outings. Bell had 210+ yards three times this year, including getting 210 against the Boise State Broncos at the outset of the year on 44 carries. This needs to likely be a very similar game for Sparty to pick up a bowl victory.

Key #3: The big uglies in the trenches have to keep the Spartans ahead of the Horned Frogs
We’re not saying that TCU is weak in its front seven by any stretch of the imagination, but the truth of the matter is that Michigan State’s front line is just a more physical and more NFL ready unit. The offense line has been paving holes for Bell all year long, while the defensive front seven features a few true stars that could be immediate impact players at the next level. LB Denicos Allen is definitely one of those men, while DE William Gholston is surely going to be playing on Sunday’s soon. The team isn’t flashy, having forced just 18 turnovers all year long, but the reason that this defense ranks in the Top 10 in the land in total defense, pass defense, and rush defense is because of the play of the big guys up front. This is where the Spartans can be more physical than just about any team that they face on a regular basis, especially outside of the Big Ten, and it is the key to winning this game for sure for the men in green and white.

Last year was the first time that the Big Ten Championship Game was played in Detroit, and it featured the Michigan State Spartans and the Wisconsin Badgers. That being said, October 27th is going to be the first time that these two teams end up sharing the field together, and it might be a game with the same level of importance. Depending upon how the rest of the Big Ten schedule goes, this third meeting between these squads in the last 12 months might be the first of two meetings this year. The two could very reasonably meet again in the Big Ten Championship Game, but it is going to take a lot of work for both squads. This is a great matchup for our NCAA football picks, and it is deservingly the No. 16 game on our countdown on the Top 25 games in 2012.

This is going to be the biggest test in the Big Ten season for QB Andrew Maxwell. We have already spoken about Maxwell as the new thing in East Lansing, and he and a very new crop of receivers will now have a bunch of games under their belts before having to go to Camp Randall. Maxwell knows that he is going to have to use his arms and his legs to be able to beat the Badgers, who always have one of the best and most ferocious defenses in the Big Ten, and in the country as a whole. Sparty is going to be counting on its defense as well, knowing that this unit returns so many big time starters like DE William Gholston, who might be one of the best pass rushers in the land. Against what could be a very raw Wisconsin passing attack, Gholston might really be able to be the difference maker.

Wisconsin won the first Big Ten Championship Game last year, and it is making a habit out of making it to the Rose Bowl. Two straight appearances in the Rose Bowl is something that the Badgers have gotten used to, but they are going to be aspiring for even more this year. RB Montee Ball was a Heisman Trophy finalist last year, and he is going to be a huge back once again with three of his five offensive linemen returning. The difference is the passing game. QB Russell Wilson was a godsend last year for the program, but now, it is up to QB Joe Brennan to get the job done. Brennan might struggle early in the year, but the schedule is relatively easy to start. Hopefully that gives him the confidence that he is going to need to be able to hang in the pocket against the Michigan State pass rush.

Michigan State @ Wisconsin Free Picks^^: Last year, we saw Michigan State figure out how to win on the final play of the game against Wisconsin. The Badgers were the better team in that first game, and we think that they proved it the second time around in the Big Ten title game as well. Now could be the time that Wisconsin really shows that it is the better of these two teams once and for all. We just don’t see how the Spartans are going to be able to go on the road and win this one. The point spread should be at least seven in our eyes, so we are taking the Badgers.

The boys from the Blue Field always have the potential to run the table under Head Coach Chris Petersen, and they have to do so if they want to play in a BCS bowl game. This year, the deck is going to be stacked against the Broncos though, as they know that they have to go through a bit of a tougher schedule to get the job done, and that schedule starts with what should be a heck of a game against the Michigan State Spartans, who are going to be locked and loaded once again in 2012. Sparty is primed for another great run to the Big Ten Championship Game, and the time could be here for them to take a trip back to the Rose Bowl after two near misses in which they were stuck in Florida for bowl games. This should be a great measuring stick for both teams, and it all goes down on the first Friday night of the season.

Boise State knows that it isn’t going to set the world on fire again this year, though winning this game would go a long way towards getting some momentum going for the move to the Big East after this season. The problem that Petersen has in this campaign is, just like the TCU Horned Frogs last year, the squad really has to rebuild. The Broncos lost two major offensive talents in QB Kellen Moore and RB Doug Martin, and that leaves them to build their offense around QB Joe Southwick, who figures to take over as the club’s leader for the next two years if he pans out. There are just five starters returning on offense and four on defense, and for this first game to be in primetime on the road against a Big Ten team might be all too much to ask for. Southwick is going to need to keep his wits about him for sure and maintain good control on the pigskin. If he can do that, the talent and coaching will be able to guide this team this year. Not doing that though, and there could be a disaster waiting to happen, as the rest of this club is quite raw.

Michigan State isn’t going to be the top team in the Big Ten this year, but it could still find a way to compete if the play of QB Andrew Maxwell turns out to be good enough to get the job done. He is going to have a great back behind him in Le’Veon Bell, and the offensive line returns four of its five starters. The problem though, is that that’s all of the returners that the unit has to work with. Eight on the other side of the ball are back though, and if defense and running the ball really wins championships, this is a good combination to have, especially with a young quarterback and no truly experienced wide receivers on offense. Watch out for DE William Gholston in this one, as he might turn out to have a great game against a potentially very bad offensive line.

Boise State @ Michigan State Free Picks^^: We really think that Maxwell is the real deal and that he’ll be able to come out of the blocks and get the job done for the Spartans. This just feels like the game a few years ago, before Boise State was really on the map, in which it went to Georgia and got creamed by the Bulldogs. The talent just isn’t there for this team this year. One of these clubs has the potential to be a Top 10 team, the other doesn’t. Simple as that. Lay the touchdown with the Spartans, though teasing them with the ‘under’ might be a smart play as well.
