It’s time to try to parse through the Daytona 500 betting lines, and here at Bankroll Sports, we have all of the answers for who is going to win the Great American Race!
The man who was all set to start on the pole actually hasn’t won a race in over 90 starts. However, we’d have to be the first to admit that it would be really cool to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Current Daytona 500 Odds: 11 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook) take the checkered flag in this one. Little E really hasn’t had all that much luck like his father did, and this, believe it or not, marks the 10th anniversary of the death of “The Intimidator” in the final laps of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt Jr. has seen his odds come flying down since he won the Budweiser Shootout and grabbed the pole for this great event, but if he is going to take the grand prize and head to Victory Lane, he’s ultimately going to have to do so out of the 43rd position after wrecking his qualifying car.
The immediate man that comes to mind when you talk about a favorite to win this event actually isn’t one of the big time chalks. The man that has won five straight Sprint Cup betting titles is Jimmie Johnson (Current Daytona 500 Odds: 14 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook). Johnson hasn’t had all that much luck here at Daytona International Speedway, though he does have a 500 win to his credit from 2006. Still, the No. 48 is driving a Chevy, the manufacturer that has won the most Daytona 500s since 2003 with six out of eight, and his Hendrick Motor Sports teammates, most notably Jeff Gordon (Daytona 500 Lines: 14 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook), have won this race a number of times in the past. Gordon hasn’t won here since 2005, but he is the only active driver that is a regular on the Sprint Cup circuit that has more than one victory at the Daytona 500. Johnson will start in 23rd, while Gordon will actually be the man that leads the boys of NASCAR to the green flag on Sunday.
There have only been three drivers in the history of this race that have won back to back titles, and none, not even the legendary Richard Petty, have won more than two in a row. The man that is going to try to join Petty, Sterling Marlin, and Cale Yarborough as back to back winners of the Great American Race is Jamie McMurray (Odds to Win the Daytona 500: 15 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook). McMurray was a bit of a surprise winner last year in this event, as he came out of really nowhere to win a wreck riddled race. In fact, it was the first time that a NASCAR race ended with two attempts at a Green-White checkered finish. He had a decent effort in qualifying, and he’ll start in 14th position with his No. 1 Chevy.
The favorite for NASCAR free picks this week is Kevin Harvick (Current Daytona 500 Favorite: 8 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook). Harvick led the most laps here at Daytona last year with 41, leading over a quarter of the race. He captured victory in 2007 in the Daytona 500, doing so out of the 34th starting position, which, at the time, was the farthest that any driver started in the pack to win the Great American Race. Since that point, Matt Kenseth (Current Daytona 500 Lines: 29 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook) won while qualifying in the 39th position, but starting in the dead last 43rd position after switching to a backup car. Kenseth also won one of the shortest Daytona 500s in history, doing so after just 152 laps thanks to a ton of rain in 2008. This time around, Harvick will start in the seventh position, while Kenseth will start one row behind him in ninth.
Keep a close eye on Tony Stewart (Lines to Win Daytona 500: 8.50 to 1 at Sportbet Sportsbook) as well. Stewart really gained some traction last year, and he nearly figured out how to top the Sprint Cup odds to take out the defending champ, Jimmie Johnson. The driver of his own car, Stewart knows what it takes to win it all, having done so twice in his career, most recently in 2005. Stewart has had a ton of wrecks here at Daytona, and he has never figured out how to take the checkered flag. There wouldn’t be a bigger victory in his career than if he were to win here, and he is the man that is most likely to be a first time winner at Daytona International Speedway. Stewart struggled in the Bud Shootout and will start 25th.
