Kobe-LebronI know we have not even hit the All-star break which will take place this weekend, but it is not too early to kick-start the MVP talk for the NBA. Especially with all the spectacular performances over the past week or so between the two leading candidate Kobe Bryant and Lebron James, it brings a great debate into full focus. Despite their being nearly 30 games or more left in the season, we will take a look at what to expect for the rest of the season along with how things are shaping up with the most prestigious title in the NBA which is the MVP Award.

Nearly no less than a week ago, many people would have given the edge to Lebron James considering he had been one of the primary reasons the Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the best teams in the East while sporting a perfect home record. However, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers have had a really strong start to February with some important victories. Bryant initiated all the madness when he broke the Madison Square Garden record for points scored inside the historic building with an amazing 61 points against the Knicks back on February 2nd. While many consider that to be the standout performance in all the Bryant uproar, I believe the Lakers big victories over Boston and Cleveland which were both on the road against the two best teams in the league at home was the biggest shocker in this insane stretch of basketball. The Lakers win over the Cavaliers ended the amazing home run Cleveland had been on with a perfect 23-0 start that ranked as one of the top 5 best starts in NBA history. It would be hard to give anybody the edge over Kobe at this point in the season considering the huge performance and wins he has lead the Lakers to over the past 2 weeks of basketball. Hard to imagine that with all the Championships and all the considerable achievements in Bryant’s career that last season was his first and only MVP Award. However the 30 year old is the prime candidate to repeat his title this season even if there is a long way to go.

Lebron James really highlighted the two standouts battle for league supremacy last week when he backed up Kobe Bryant’s performance at Madison Square Garden with an electrifying performance of his own. In only two days after Bryant broke a Madison Square record with 61 points, James made a huge impact for the Cavaliers in their win over the Knicks. Lebron was given credit for a triple-double with an outstanding 52 point performance to go along with the stats for the night. Cleveland won the game 107-102 and James finished with 52 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assist. The game would have been the only triple-double in Madison Square Garden history that included 50 or more points. However, the NBA reversed the ruling a few days after the event claiming Ben Wallace tapped the 9th rebound that was recorded to Lebron giving Wallace the rebound instead. Still, Lebron ended with a huge night and quite possibly if the night had not been so big there would probably never have been a review on that rebound. Instead when you are in the spotlight, everything goes through the microscope. While King James declared that his performance was no attempt to match Kobe’s 61 in the garden, Lebron definitely wanted to make a statement that night. James who was an MVP finalist last season will be the most likely candidate with the chance of stealing the hardware away from Kobe in search of his first MVP Award.

Outside of the undeclared two horse race that many perceive the MVP race will come down to there are still a few others with a shot at the MVP even though the odds will be stacked against them. Dwayne Wade leads the NBA in scoring with 28.3 points over James and Bryant. Wade is also posting a solid 7 assist per game, but the problem is that the Miami Heat is mediocre at best right now. Not to mention MVP Awards are usually handed to individuals that really make a huge impact for their team. While Wade’s numbers are impressive, he has not led the Heat to the success that they need at this point in the year. Dirk Nowitzki is another player having a big year with a long shot to make a run at an MVP trophy. Nowitzki won the 2007 MVP Title and is having a solid season trying to give the Mavericks a boost to get them back in the playoff race. Fresh off a 44 point night against Chicago, Nowitzki is 4th in the NBA in scoring while adding a little over 8 rebounds per night. Chris Paul was a leading MVP Finalist last season and is posting strong numbers again this year with double-double averages 21.5 points and 11 assist per outing. However, the Hornets have been struggling and Paul has been battling a groin injury. Still Paul is one of the most exciting players to watch in the league and it will be interesting to see if he can turn it on during the latter part of the season.

Who deserves the NBA regular season MVP for 2009?

  • Kobe Bryant (50.0%, 250 Votes)
  • Lebron James (35.0%, 174 Votes)
  • Dwyane Wade (14.0%, 71 Votes)
  • Other (Reply) (1.0%, 5 Votes)

Total Voters: 500

well, i think kobe will still be the MVP..

look at what happened at the all star game..

it proves that Lebron is still young and he needs more confidence when it comes on making a final shot..

kobe has everything to become the MVP this season, he proves that he’s not just a player but a LEADER (i’m referring to the his team LAL)…

  2. Priscilla Says:

I think both King James and Kobe are good players. But when it comes down to it Lebron is missing something that Kobe has. And that is that Kobe knows how to support his team and make good choices. People say Kobe is a ball hogger and when he shoots less they say he’s playing poorly. Make up your mind people! What matters is that hes making his team better and they have his back. It dosen’t matter what the stats are, if the MVP award was based only on stats hands down Lebrom would win, but its not only about stats. Its also about making your team better so that they don’t always need to depend on you, and thats what Kobe has done. Again Lebron is good but he’s not quite yet at Kobe’s level even though he is doing amazing things at his age (24). so my choice is Kobe for MVP even though im both a Lebron and Kobe fan.

  3. Bencamerondavis Says:

LOL!! It’s so funny that neither of those guys will win MVP after last nights performance by the best player in the World… DWYAAAANE WAAAAAADE!!!!!!!

  4. Kai Says:

No, if lebron james is not the mvp this season then I swear I am never watching basketball ever again. I could honestly get into a yearlong argument about this and would win but I’ll save that for anyone who wants to hear it. All I have to say is, if wade or kobe is named mvp then the voters are absolutely stupid. People will vote for wade based on how he has carried a sub-elite team with ridiculous stats and superhuman plays. But, have you been watching lebron james the last five seasons? That is exactly what he has had to do, with a ten times worse supporting cast. Wade had freakin Michael beasley and jermaine o’neal on his team, and they stil aren’t elite. Now lebron has the best team in the league and he doesnt even get honored. That makes no sense. If people vote for kobe again they will be making their vote for him last year seem even more stupid. How can you give it to kobe last year, saying he was the best player on the best team (even though pau gasol is the best on the lakers) and now not give it to lebron, for lebron is ten times better (period), has the same record as kobe, and has a ten times worse team. Just look at the numbers and the situation and it is obvious who is mvp. If you wanna hear my full argument just ask.

  5. philippines' jeje Says:

hahaha!, kobe makes his team better than lebron? you must be kidding.kb’s first option in every play is to score.. better give that credit to the great phil jackson..! lebron plays like a point guard equipped w/ a powerforward’s strength and a shooting guard’s scoring prowess..

numbers dont lie, see nba.com’s efficiency rating/ pts, reb. & more importantly assists/putting the team’s record into consideration….lebron is certainly this year’s mvp..no contest.

  6. jhay-ar nicolaas Says:

i think d-wade is more than a MVP! he is the new SUPERMAN.

  7. Allen Says:

Forsure Lebron James is going to get mvp, he is the best there is he is probably going to be the next Mj when his career is done, he is amazing do you know anyone that comes out of high school and on his 3rd year averages 31.4 points a game? He should talk mvp home this year noone in the nba even comes close to these stats, 28 points a game, 7 assist a game, 7 rebounds a game, he is 6th in the nba in steals, averages 1.3 blocks a game, he leads the nba in triple-doubles with 7 would probably have more then 10 if he wasnt off by 1 or 2 assist or reb in a few games this season, and also has 25 double-doubles and when his team needs him for at three they can relie on him to pull up a few threes and dunks to get the game into over time or for a win and when lebron plays good which is every single game all of his team-mates play good.

  8. Richard Lee Ochoa Says:

But there is Another Player But He is Very Very Very Good But With the NBA Basketball Court and He is a Starter and For tony Parker He Can Put Up Numbers and that Also He Can Put Up Some Good Stats. But He Beat the Los Angeles Clippers Bad the Score Was From Last Friday is 111 to 98 and For tony Parker He Has 42 Good Points. But For tony Parker He is Way Better than Lebron James and Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. But Wears #9 but for San Antonio Spurs. But He Deserved to Be the MVP to Win it twice But for this year But He Wants a Another Ring But for 2009 but He Will Be the top 3 But For this NBA Race For the MVP For this year.and tell that For the ESPN Shootaround.

  9. Tonyj Says:

I’ve been thinking about this whole NBA MVP race, and I see a potential problem around the corner! Let me explain! Okay, the big race is for the NBA Defensive player of the Year! The reason I say that is, because it appears to be an award that D-Wade is the favorite to win. Well, if that happens, and he leads the league in scoring, while leading his horrible team to the playoffs, it really creates a problem in naming anyone else the league MVP. As of today, he has more points, assists, steals, and blocks than the other leading candidate! It’s going to be a really tough decision, and I hope the league doesn’t choose to not give him the Defensive player award because they see the potential problem. And, for GOD sakes, don’t pacify him with the Comeback Player of the Year Award to save face. This is definitely going to be an interesting scenario come award time!

  10. Polo Says:

King James is a beast, but he’s no Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant is God with he’s skills compared to Lebron. Its like comparing a G4 to a G5, both are great jets, but only one is truely the superior. Rite now, Kobe is the shit. Lebron has got nothing but time. He’s scaringly good at such a young age, but Kobe is way more refined right now. So the MVP this season is definitely Kobe’s.

  11. flok Says:

I Think both kobe and lebron deserved to be the mvp, but kobe is much greater for me, because even though his not leading the stat of the league he still pull his team on the top…his a good leader and a good competitor, because you know every time he play on the opponent home town there’s a lot of booowing he still play in a good way, because i think he knew that it was just a competetion and he is the greatest on the opponent so he deserved to have that in order for him to have a bad game but still he made it good. if lebron wins it’s fine with me but if kobe win the mvp i’m very very happy because he’s the player i idolize most not (taking forgranted mj). hope my son with be like kobe in the near future…for the record my son name is “Kobe” took from my idol.
go lakers take the championship trophy..good luck! go kobe go kobe go!!!

  12. someguy Says:

This season, Kobe is great but Lebron is Better. Why? Look at their stats and compare. Look at their Team’s Standings and compare. Then tell me who has a better stats and team standing.

A lot of people loves Kobe that is why whenever someone asks “Who’s your MVP this year? Kobe or Lebron?”. Of course, if you’re a Kobe fan, you’d definitely say Kobe. We should not always look back on what they’ve achieved. It’s true that so far, Kobe has better accomplishments than Lebron but in this case, we should look at the present and analyze it to determine who is better in terms of stats and Team standing. Because i guess these matter in finding out the real MVP.

  13. Jason Says:

Both of the guys are excellent players. Well I should be saying all three guys are great. I think of all, LeBron deserves to take that trophy home. He has transformed himself into such a phenomenal basketball player and he is just absolutely spectacular in almost every aspect of the game this year. He has really stepped it up this year with 7 triple-doubles and lost count of all of his double-doubles. He has really matured and has done an astounding job this year. LeBron For MVP!

  14. David M Says:

I’m from LA and like the Lakers. Was in Miami in March and went to the Heat vs Bulls game where Wade won it at the end of 2nd overtime. That was clutch. Gotta say that Wade is the Heat’s MVP and the league MVP because he is the only reason why the Heat win and are in the play offs. Kobe has more of a supporting cast. Lemme tell you. Wade was a one man show. It was like watching 1 on 5. He was incredible. My votes on Wade then Kobe.. LJ.

  15. jimmy q narag Says:

i think lebron james better than kobe coz lebron doing a lot of assists, rebounds, points than kobe, kobe only points

  16. olan...olan Says:

Well, i think D Wade is the man deserved to be a 2009 MVP, his team is not as powerful as Cavs & Lakers but he brought it into the play off.
It is not the winningest team to be consider, it is how the a player carried the whole team into his shoulder every game.. good luck..

  17. Macky Says:

The MVP award was over, the decision is Fair, Look at the individual stats..
look at the most Winning Team, so thoses fan of KObe shut-up.Tell Kobe come back next time, or thats it for Him.
