Knowshon Moreno rookie preview for the number 12 pick in the 2009 NFL draft selected by the Denver Broncos from the Georgia Bulldogs. |
Number 12 Pick: Denver Broncos – Knowshon Moreno (RB, Georgia)
The Denver Broncos choose running back Knowshon Moreno out of the University of Georgia. With new head coach Josh McDaniels, the Broncos decided to go for offense in the NFL draft. Moreno gives them an ultra quick back that has good hands for the passing game.
Moreno played just 2 seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, but went after the record books in that brief time. He is a runner who carries a heavy load, getting the ball for 19.15 rushes per game last year. He ran for 1,400 yards last year and ran for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He averaged 131.12 yards per game by adding 12.2 average passing yards per game.
Moreno plays like an experienced back despite his lack of overall experience. He is able to read defenses quickly and find the hole fast. He is also an elusive back. He often makes the first tackler miss or simply sheds them with moves and stiff arms. He is even known to simply vault would be tacklers to make them miss. Moreno is a pure athlete. He can electrify an offense and a football crowd. Moreno has never had off the field trouble and seems to be a mature player.
If Moreno has any weaknesses, it’s that he lacks the size to be a power running back. He also lacks pure speed, but he makes up for those weaknesses with his vision and athletic ability. Even though his NFL combine was a disappointment, Moreno did not drop too far down in the draft.
