This week's Monday Night Football will be one of the biggest events in recent memory. Not because the two teams facing off are undefeated and tied for first atop the NFC South, but for a bigger reason; Monday night marks the first game played in the New Orleans Superdome since the horrific catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina at the end of last August. What many New Orleans residents called home during the aftermath of Katrina will be the Mecca of the sports world on Monday night. Two NFC unbeatens will match-up in the eighth wonder of the world for what is sure to one of the most exciting nights of the year. What will be your Monday Night Football Pick?
The Falcons come into this match-up as one of the best looking teams in the NFL. They defeated the Super Bowl contending Carolina Panthers 20-6 in week one and dominated the Buccaneers by a score of 14-3 in week two. The Falcons defense is clicking, and yet to give up a touchdown. Highlighted by newly acquired John Abraham and cornerback DeAngelo Hall, this is a championship caliber defense. However, it is not only the defense that has impressed; Atlanta’s run game has also been sensational. The Falcons rushed for over 300 yards against the Bucs, as both Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn rushed for over 100 yards. Running the football effectively will be the main goal of the Falcons going into Monday Night Football.
While the Saints defense has not looked great, their offense has been very impressive. New Orleans is off to a 2-0 start with two road wins. They defeated the Browns in Cleveland and Green Bay in Lambeau Field behind great play from Drew Brees and rookie Reggie Bush. Brees has shown no lingering effects from the shoulder injury he suffered in last year’s finale and New Orleans looks like they have found their quarterback of the future. However, it hasn’t only been Brees that has looked great; Bush, McAllister and Horn have also performed admirably. The Saints skilled players are some of the best in the game and should be able to stay in a shootout with anybody. However, if the defense does not pick up their play on Monday night, Atlanta will run away with this one, as their offense won’t be able to match the production they did in the first two weeks.

While the Saints have looked great in their first two games, they are matching up against a team who is head and shoulders above either of their first two opponents. If the Saints defense does not improve vastly then Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn will continue to have their way. The Falcons defense surely won’t let up 20+ points that the Saints offense has been used to, so they will have to find another way to win. However, even if the Saints do not come out victorious on the scoreboard this Monday night, the entire city of New Orleans is getting a winner by returning to normalcy…even if only for a few hours.
