1. Kansas Jay Hawks (20-1) - The Jay Hawks moved back into the top spot with losses from Texas and Kentucky. Kansas picked up a huge emotional win on Saturday night over rival Kansas State. The Jay Hawks saw five players score in double figures, led by Cole Aldrich’s 18. Sherron Collins aided in the win with a late basket, plus free throws. Despite the win, Kansas was out rebounded 36-33. The Jay Hawks are the lone team in the Big 12 without a conference loss. Kansas leads Texas and Missouri by two games atop the conference. Coach Self and his team will now take off until Wednesday, when they play at Colorado. The Buffaloes are 2-5 in conference play and 11-10 overall. After that, the Nebraska Cornhuskers will invade Phog Allen on February 6th. Nebraska is in last place, with a 1-5 conference record. On February 8th, the Jay Hawks will head to Austin to take on the Longhorns, in what will be a huge conference game for both teams.
2. Villanova Wildcats (19-1) - The Wildcats move up to the # 2 spot, with their 19-1 record. After their December 13th loss at Temple, the Wildcats have won ten straight games. Scottie Reynolds continues to lead the team in scoring, with 18.7 points per game. The Wildcats, as a team, are scoring 85.5 points per game, which leads the conference. Villanova is the lone Big East team without a loss. The Wildcats hold a slim lead over Syracuse, who is 8-1. The next time the Wildcats will put their winning streak on the line is Tuesday February 2nd, when they host the Seton Hall Pirates. The Pirates are 12-7 and 3-5 in conference play. On February 6th and 8th, the Wildcats will face their toughest stretch of the season with trips to Georgetown and West Virginia.
3. Kentucky Wildcats (20-1) - The Wildcats fall to # 3 after their road loss mid-week to South Carolina. Kentucky was able to bounce back with a win on Saturday at home to Vanderbilt. John Wall continues to impress the nation, as a freshman, leading the Wildcats in scoring, with 17.1 points per game. Kentucky, as a team, are scoring 82.2 points per game, while their defense is allowing just 66 per game. With the win over the Commodores, the Wildcats are now tied atop the SEC with a 5-1 record. Kentucky will remain at home, and host Ole Miss on Tuesday. The Rebels are 4-3 in SEC play, and 16-5 overall. Kentucky will then play at LSU on Saturday February 6th, and host the Alabama Crimson Tide on February 9th and Tennessee Volunteers on February 13th.
4. Syracuse Orange (21-1) - The Orange, with just one loss on the season come in as the # 4 team in the country. Syracuse’s lone loss came on January 2nd to the Pittsburgh Panthers. Since that loss, the Orange have won eight straight games. In that winning streak, Jim Boeheim’s team has beaten West Virginia, Notre Dame and Georgetown. The Orange most recent win was nothing spectacular, as they held on to edge DePaul 59-57. The next game for Syracuse is on February 2nd, when they host the Providence Friars. On February 7th, Syracuse will play at Cincinnati. The following week, the Orange will host Connecticut (February 10th) and Louisville (February 14th).
5. Texas Longhorns (18-3) - The Longhorns are in the midst of their worst struggle of the season. Texas has fallen in three of their last four games; including Saturday’s home loss to the Baylor Bears, in overtime. The struggle has sent the Longhorns to 4-2 in conference play, two games behind the leader - Kansas. The Longhorns are led in scoring by Damion Jones, and his 18.2 points per game, and 10.9 rebounds per game. Texas will play two straight road games; first on Monday at Oklahoma State, and then Saturday at Oklahoma. Once the road trip has been completed; Texas will come back to Austin to host the Kansas Jay Hawks on Monday February 8th and then the Nebraska Cornhuskers on February 13th.
6. Michigan State Spartans (18-3) - The Michigan State Spartans remain at the top of the Big Ten Conference, yet to lose. Michigan State has won ten straight games since their December 22nd loss at Texas. The Spartans three losses on the season, came to Texas, North Carolina and Florida. Michigan State holds a three game lead over Wisconsin and Illinois. Kalin Lucas leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game, followed by Raymar Morgan’s 11.7. The Spartans will play their next two games on the road; both key affairs; at Wisconsin (February 2nd) and at Illinois (February 6th). On February 9th, Michigan State will host Purdue to close out their toughest stretch of games all season.
7. West Virginia Mountaineers (17-3) - Since their New Years Day loss to Purdue, the Mountaineers have went 6-2 in their last eight games. During that streak, West Virginia has lost at Notre Dame, and at home to Syracuse. The Mountaineers are 6-2 in Big East play, tied in third place. The latest win for West Virginia was on January 30th when they downed the Louisville Cardinals 77-74. The Mountaineers are led in scoring by Da’Sean Butler, who is scoring 15.9 points per game. West Virginia will host the Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday, followed by a trip to St. John’s on Saturday. On February 8th, the Mountaineers will play in a key conference affair with Villanova, followed by trips to both Pittsburgh and Providence.
8. Georgetown Hoyas (16-4) - The Georgetown Hoyas went out of Big East play and beat the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday night. Georgetown, who was coming off a 17 point road loss at Syracuse used 21 points from Chris Wright to beat Duke in front of the President of the United States in attendance. The Hoyas shot 71.7% from the field in the win. Georgetown comes in with a 6-3 Big East record, trailing Villanova at 8-0 and Syracuse at 8-1. The Hoyas will host the South Florida Bulls on Wednesday in a Big East tilt, and also stay at home for Saturday’s game with Villanova. On February 9th and February 14th the Hoyas play at Providence and Rutgers.
9. Duke Blue Devils (17-4) - Duke went outside of the Atlantic Coast Conference and were defeated by Georgetown in a battle of two top ten squads. The Blue Devils allowed the host Hoyas to shoot 71.7% from the field, a record against a Coach K led team. Duke had won two straight coming into the game; at Clemson and at home with Florida State. The Blue Devils are 5-2 in conference play, trailing just the Maryland Terrapins. The Blue Devils will now take until Thursday off, when they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Following that, Duke will go on the road for two straight games; Saturday at Boston College, then the first of two rivalry games against North Carolina on February 10th. On February 13th the Blue Devils will come back home to take on Maryland.
10. Purdue Boilermakers (18-3) - The Boilermakers climb back into the Top 10 after righting the ship following their three game losing streak. Purdue has climbed towards the top of the Big Ten standings, but Michigan State holds a three game lead on the cluster of Illinois, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. The Boilermakers are coming off a three point win at home over Wisconsin, and then Sunday’s win over Penn State. Purdue is led in scoring by E’Twaun Moore, who is scoring 17.6 points per game. The Boilermakers as a team are scoring 75.3 points per game, while allowing 62.3. Purdue will now play two straight road games starting February 4th at Indiana and at Michigan State on February 9th. The next home game for Matt Painter’s squad will be on February 13th; with Iowa.
11. Brigham Young Cougars (20-2) - The Brigham Young Cougars come into February with 20 wins and just 2 losses on the season. The Cougars two losses on the season came at Utah State, and most recently at New Mexico. Brigham Young, with a 6-1 conference record holds a half game lead in the Mountain West Conference lead. The Cougars are led in scoring by Jimmer Fredette and his 21.2 points per game. As a team, Brigham Young is scoring 82.7 points per game, as the defense is yielding 63.3. The Cougars most recent win came on Saturday; 82-69 over Utah. The Cougars will now host the Texas Christian University on Tuesday, followed by a trip to UNLV on Saturday. The following week, Brigham Young will host Air Force on February 13th.
12. Tennessee Volunteers (16-4) - Despite losing two straight games, the Tennessee Volunteers still remain # 12 in the rankings. Tennessee took losses at Georgia and then at home to Vanderbilt to fall to 4-2 in SEC play. The Kentucky Wildcats and Vanderbilt Commodores remain at the top of the conference with 5-1 records. The Volunteers are led in scoring by Scott Hopson, who took over for Tyler Smith, who was suspended for the remainder of the season. Tennessee is scoring 77.8 points per game. The Volunteers will travel to LSU on Thursday, before hosting the upbeat South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. The following week, Tennessee will play two tough road games; at Vanderbilt (February 9th) and Kentucky (February 13th).
13. Northern Iowa Panthers (19-2) - Out of the Missouri Valley Conference, the Northern Iowa Panthers are getting less publicity than other top teams in the country. Despite that, the Panthers continue finding ways to win basketball games. Northern Iowa, at 19-2 have a stranglehold on the conference, leading second place Wichita State by 2.5 games. The Panthers lost their second game of the season on February 19th at Wichita State. The loss snapped a 15 game winning streak. Adam Koch and Jordan Egleseder lead the team in scoring, but dropping in just over 12 per game. The Panthers have been winning games with their stellar defense; allowing just 55 points per game. The Panthers will continue their run towards a conference title on Wednesday, when they host second place Wichita State. On February 6th the Southern Illinois Salukis will pay a visit. Following that, the Panthers will play two straight road games at Drake (February 10th) and Bradley (February 13th).
14. Rhode Island Rams (17-3) - Rhode Island, at 17-3, picked up two straight wins to move to 5-2 in Atlantic Ten Play. The Rams continue to trail Xavier (7-1) atop the conference lead. The Rams two conference losses came in tight games; overtime to Temple, then at Xavier. The Rams are led by Keith Cothran and his 16.3 points per game. Rhode Island will travel to LaSalle on Tuesday, then host Massachusetts and Richmond on February 6th and 10th. On February 13th the Rams will face a tough test at Temple.
15. Kansas State Wildcats (17-4) - Kansas State, despite the Saturday night loss, still come in at # 15 in the rankings. The Wildcats were unable to pull the upset over their state and conference rival Kansas. The Wildcats could not execute enough in overtime, and Sherron Collins of Kansas sealed the deal. The Wildcats with the loss fell to 4-3 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats trail Kansas, who is 6-0, along with Texas and Missouri; both at 4-2. Jacob Pullen leads Kansas State in scoring, with just under 20 points per game. The Wildcats will play back-to-back road games this week; Nebraska (Tuesday) and Iowa State (Saturday). The following week, the Wildcats will host Colorado on February 13th.
16. Missouri Tigers (16-5) - One of the more surprising teams in the country; the Missouri Tigers. The Tigers are tied with Texas in second place in the Big 12 conference, with losses at Oklahoma and Kansas. The Tigers picked up a 15 point win on Saturday over conference foe Oklahoma State. In the win, Missouri scored 95 points, to add to a robust 81.5 points per game as a team. Kim English leads the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game. The Tigers will host the Texas A+M Aggies on Wednesday, and then play on the road Saturday at Colorado. The following week, the Tigers will play at home against Iowa State(February 10th) and on the road at Baylor (February 13th).
17. Wisconsin Badgers (16-5) - Out of the Big Ten, the Wisconsin Badgers check in at # 17. Wisconsin is tied with Illinois, Ohio State and Purdue for second place in the conference standings. All four teams trail the leader Michigan State, by three games. The Badgers are coming off their tough three point loss on the road at Purdue. On Tuesday the Badgers will play in another tough ball game, when they host the Michigan State Spartans. On Saturday, the Badgers will head to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines of Michigan. On February 9th and February 13th, the Badgers will host Illinois and Indiana. Trevon Hughes leads the Badgers in scoring with 16 points per game.
18. Vanderbilt Commodores (16-4) - The Commodores had their ten game winning streak snapped on Saturday, at Kentucky. The Commodores struggled to score early, and then were unable to catch up to John Wall and company. Vanderbilt, with the loss, remain tied with the Wildcats atop the SEC. Jeremaine Beal leads a slew of four players in double digit scoring per game. The Commodores will host Mississippi State on Wednesday, and travel to Georgia on Saturday. The following week, Vanderbilt will host Tennessee (February 9th) and LSU (February 13th).
19. Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-4) - Gonzaga took their first conference loss late Saturday night at San Francisco. The loss for the Bulldogs snapped their nine game winning streak. Before the loss, the last time Gonzaga was defeated was December 19th to Duke. The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Matt Bouldin and Elias Harris. Both of the players are scoring just a bit over 16 points per game. Gonzaga is now in a tie for first place in the WCC with St. Mary’s. Gonzaga will now wait until Thursday to host Portland. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will go on the road, and out of conference to travel to Memphis. On February 11th, the conference lead will be up for grabs, as the Bulldogs host St. Mary’s.
20. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (16-5) - At 16-5, the Yellow Jackets come in at # 20 in the rankings. Georgia Tech is 4-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, which ranks them just a game behind the leading team; Duke. Georgia Tech picked up a win over Duke earlier in January 71-67. The Yellow Jackets have won their last two games; over Wake Forest and a non conference win over Kentucky State. The Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by Gani Lawai. Lawai is scoring 14.5 points per game. Georgia Tech will play at Duke on Thursday, then host North Carolina State on Saturday. The following week, Georgia Tech will play at Miami (February 10th) and at Wake Forest (February 13th).
21. Temple Owls (18-4) - Temple moves back into the Top 25, with their 16-4 record. Inside the Atlantic Ten, the Owls are 6-1, ½ game behind Xavier. The Owls lone conference loss came on January 27th at Charlotte. That loss snapped a six game winning streak for Temple. Ryan Brooks leads the Owls in scoring with 15.9 points per game. As a team, the Owls are scoring 65 points per game, and allowing just 56.9. Temple will host Duquesne on Wednesday, and play at Richmond on Saturday.
22. Cornell Big Red (18-3) - For the first time this season, the Cornell Big Red move into the Top 25. The Big Red have won six straight games, since their five point loss at Kansas. Cornell’s other two losses came to Seton Hall and at Syracuse. The Big Red lead the Ivy League at 4-0, while Princeton is 2-0. The Big Red are led in scoring by Ryan Wittman’s 17.5 points per game. Cornell will host Yale on Friday, and Brown on Saturday. The following week, the Big Red will play at Penn and at Princeton.
23. Pittsburgh Panthers (16-5) - The Pittsburgh Panthers, after their quick conference start have began to struggle. The Panthers have lost three of their last four conference games, including Sunday’s loss at South Florida. The other two losses for Pittsburgh came at home to Georgetown and at Seton Hall. The Panthers are 6-3 in conference play, trailing Villanova (8-0), Syracuse (8-1), West Virginia (6-2), and Georgetown (6-3). The Panthers are getting 17.1 points from Ashton Gibbs, and 6.6 rebounds from Brad Wanamaker. Pittsburgh will play another tough game on Wednesday; at West Virginia. On February 6th the Panthers will host Seton Hall, then on February 8th, go out of conference play and host Robert Morris.
23. Ohio State Buckeyes (16-6) - The Buckeyes, at 6-3 in the Big Ten, are tied with three other teams (Purdue, Illinois and Wisconsin) for second place, trailing Michigan State. Ohio State has won all 13 of their home games this season, including their most recent win 85-63 over Minnesota. Star Evan Turner leads the team in points, with 18.4, rebounds, 9.9, and assists, 5.5. The Buckeyes will continue the soft portion of their conference slate on Wednesday with Penn State, followed by Sunday with Iowa. Following that, Ohio State will play two road games; at Indiana (February 10th) and at Illinois (February 14th).
25. UAB Blazers (18-3) - At 18-3, the UAB Blazers are # 25 in the country. The Blazers are coming off their third loss of the season; 74-65 to UTEP. The loss snapped a seven game winning streak. With the loss, UAB is now tied with Tulsa and UTEP at the top of Conference USA. The Blazers will play their next two games of the season on the road; February 3rd at Memphis and then February 6th at Rice. On February 13th UAB will host the Marshall Thundering Herd. UAB has won 10 of 11 games at home this season.
