1. Syracuse Orange (27-2) – The Syracuse Orange take over the top spot in the rankings with their 18 point home win on Saturday night. The win came in the largest regular season crowd in college basketball history. The Carrier Dome had over 30,000 people file in for the team between the Orange and Villanova. In the win, the Orange were led by Rick Jackson, and his 19 points. The win for Syracuse pushed them to 14-2 in Big East play; two games ahead of Villanova. The Orange can seal the deal on Tuesday, when they host St. John’s. If they cannot win Tuesday; their final chance to win the regular season outright is Saturday at Louisville.
2. Kansas Jayhawks (27-2) – The Jayhawks fell from the top spot after losing in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Kansas trailed by 16 at home, before storming back to make it interesting late; but fell 85-77. The loss for Bill Self’s squad was their first in conference play. The Jay Hawks can still wrap up the conference outright on Monday, in a huge tilt against state rival Kansas State. If the Jay Hawks cannot beat the Wildcats Monday night, their final chance will come on Saturday at Missouri.
3. Kentucky Wildcats (27-2) – After becoming Bruce Pearl and the Tennessee Volunteers next victim; the Kentucky Wildcats took a one team fall from # 2 to # 3. The Wildcats lost 74-65 in Knoxville. Kentucky’s loss came despite freshman DeMarcus Cousins’ 15 points and 14 rebounds. On the season, Cousins’ is scoring 16.7 points per game. Kentucky, with the loss, is one game up on Vanderbilt at the top of the SEC. The Wildcats have the chance to seal up no worse than a share of the conference on Wednesday in Athens, against the Georgia Bulldogs. Kentucky’s final game will come on March 7th, at home, against the Florida Gators.
4. Duke Blue Devils (24-4) – The Blue Devils come into Sunday night’s road game at 24-4 and ½ game up on the Maryland Terrapins for the Atlantic Coast Conference lead. Duke has won seven straight games since their January 30th loss at Georgetown. Duke’s most recent win was a 70-52 non conference home win over Tulsa. Jon Scheyer leads the team with 18.8 points per game, while Kyle Singler is the leading rebound man, with 7.2 per game. Duke, after leaving Virginia, will host Maryland on Wednesday, and then play their top rival on Saturday at home, against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
5. Kansas State Wildcats (24-4) – The Wildcats continue to be one of the surprise teams in the country, winning their 24th game on Saturday. Kansas State used 14 points off the bench from forward Jamar Samuels in the ten point win over Missouri. Jacob Pullen is leading four Wildcats in double figures; with 18.5 points per game. The Wildcats still remain in the hunt for a share of the Big 12 title, but will need to beat Kansas in Lawrence on Monday to continue in the race. The final game of the regular season for Kansas State will come on Saturday; at home, against Iowa State.
6. New Mexico Lobos (27-3) – The Lobos moved up two positions from # 8 to # 6 with their win over Brigham Young on Saturday. The win for New Mexico also clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season, and allowed them to hold the number one seed in the conference tournament. New Mexico has won 13 straight games, with three coming by single digits. Darington Hobson scored 20 points in the win over the Cougars, and picked up a game winning block late in the game. Hobson is scoring 15.7 points and ripping down 9 rebounds per game.
7. Tennessee Volunteers (21-7) – Bruce Pearl and the Volunteers became the first team to beat the # 1 and # 2 teams this season. Tennessee jumped off to a great start; leading Kentucky by 20 points, before holding on for a 74-65 win. J.P. Prince scored 20 points, while Scotty Hopson added 15 in the win. Tennessee moved to a tie for third place in the SEC, trailing both Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The Volunteers will play their final home game on Wednesday, before traveling to Mississippi State on March 6th.
8. Pittsburgh Panthers (22-7) – Despite falling on the road at Notre Dame, the Pittsburgh Panthers have pushed their way to the front four in the Big East. The Panthers picked up their 22nd win of the season on Saturday with a 71-64 win at St. John’s. Pittsburgh is led by Ashton Gibbs, with 16 points per game. The Panthers will play their final two regular season games at home; Thursday with the Providence Friars and Saturday with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
9. Villanova Wildcats (23-5) – The Villanova Wildcats lost their third game in last four played; getting blasted at Syracuse 95-77. With the loss, the Wildcats dropped two games behind Syracuse at the top of the Big East, with just two games to play. Scottie Reynolds continues to make his move towards a first team All-American, with 18.9 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats are scoring 83.6 per game. Villanova holds just a one game lead over both West Virginia and Pittsburgh for second place. The Wildcats will face a tough schedule to finish the regular season; starting Tuesday at Cincinnati, and finishing the season Saturday with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
10. Michigan State Spartans (22-7) – The Spartans picked up a big win on Sunday and move back into the hunt for a Big Ten title. Michigan State is now 12-4 in the Big Ten, tied with Purdue, and ½ game behind Ohio State. The Spartans held the Purdue Boilermakers to just 44 points in the win. Michigan State used 16 points and 11 rebounds from Raymar Morgan in the win. Tom Izzo’s Spartans will play their final two games at home, starting Thursday with Penn State, and finishing Sunday with state rival Michigan.
11. Purdue Boilermakers (24-4) – The Boilermakers knew they were going to have a tough time having losing Robbie Hummel to a torn ACL in the win over Minnesota. What they did not know is how difficult it would be. The result, scoring just 44 points in a loss to the Michigan State Spartans. The loss for Purdue dropped them back to a tie for the lead in the Big Ten. Purdue, at 12-4, is tied with Michigan State, both teams ½ back of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Purdue will finish the season Wednesday with the Indiana Hoosiers and then Saturday at Penn State.
12. Ohio State Buckeyes (23-7) – The Buckeyes picked up a 66-55 win over Michigan on Saturday to move to 23-7 overall and 13-4 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have just one game left on their regular season schedule, and that comes on Tuesday against Illinois Fighting Illini. Ohio State pounded the Illini earlier in the year, on the road, 72-53. The Buckeyes continue to feature one of the best players in the country, in Evan Turner, who is scoring 19.7 points per game and ripping down 9.3 rebounds per game. 14
13. Brigham Young Cougars (26-4) – The Cougars dropped out of the Top Ten on Saturday after their 83-81 loss to New Mexico. Brigham Young played the game with limited services from top scorer Jimmer Fredette, who was sidelined with a stomach illness. The loss for the Cougars dropped them two games back of the Lobos at the top of the Mountain West Conference. Brigham Young holds a one game lead over UNLV and two in front of San Diego State. The Cougars can wrap up the two seed in their final two games; both on the road. The road schedule starts Wednesday at Utah, and then Saturday at Texas Christian University.
14. Temple Owls (24-5) – The Temple Owls despite winning games, fall from # 13 to # 14. Their latest game was a win on Sunday over LaSalle. The win for the Owls kept them in a tie for first place, with the Xavier Musketeers. Xavier and Temple are now both 12-2, and lead Richmond by one game. Temple will play at St. Louis on Wednesday, then finish the regular season on Saturday, with George Washington.
15. Vanderbilt Commodores (20-6) – After escaping a home game with Georgia in overtime, the Commodores went to Arkansas and blew the Razorbacks out 89-72. The win for Vanderbilt moved them to 22-6 overall and 11-3 in the SEC. With Kentucky’s loss to Tennessee, the Commodores are just one game behind Kentucky. Vanderbilt has two games left in the regular season; Tuesday at Florida, followed by a home game on March 6th with South Carolina.
16. Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-5) – The Gonzaga Bulldogs won the West Coast Conference on Saturday night with a 75-69 win over San Francisco. The Bulldogs, at 12-2, beat St. Mary’s, who finished 11-3. In Saturday’s win, Elias Harris scored 17 points, and Robert Sacre added 13. The Bulldogs will play one final regular season game on Tuesday, a non-conference affair against Cal-State-Bakersfield. Following that game, Gonzaga will be the number one seed in the WCC tournament, and most likely face Pepperdine.
17. West Virginia Mountaineers (22-6) – The Mountaineers picked up their 22nd win of the season on Saturday; 74-68 over Cincinnati. In the win, Kevin Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half to hold off the Bearcats. The win for the Mountaineers kept them in third place in the 16 team Big East. West Virginia is tied with Pittsburgh, just one game behind second place Villanova. The top four seeds in the conference get byes in the first two rounds. Da’Sean Butler leads the Mountaineers in scoring with 16.9 per game. West Virginia will play two more conference games; Monday at home with Georgetown, followed by a road game Saturday at Villanova.
18. Butler Bulldogs (26-4) – Butler kept the nation’s longest winning streak alive Friday night with a five point road win at Valparaiso. The Bulldogs have not lost since December 22nd when they fell at UAB. The Bulldogs ran the table in the Horizon Conference with their 18-0 record, trailed by Wright State at 12-6. Butler is led in scoring by Gordon Hayward’s 15.8 points per game, and Shelvin Mack’s 13.9. Butler will now start the conference tournament, with a first round bye.
19. Northern Iowa Panthers (25-4) – The Northern Iowa Panthers completed the Missouri Valley schedule on Saturday with a 61-55 win over the Illinois State Redbirds. The Panthers held off the Redbirds with Jordan Eglseder’s 13 points and Johnny Moran’s 7 rebounds. The Panthers three conference losses all came on the road; Wichita State, Bradley and Evansville. Northern Iowa will now start the Missouri Valley Conference tournament as the # 1 seed, and will play the winner of the Drake/Southern Illinois play-in game.
20. Wisconsin Badgers (21-7) – The Wisconsin Badgers move up three positions from # 23 to # 20. Wisconsin picked up a 32 point win earlier in the week at Indiana. Trevon Hughes and Jon Leuer lead Wisconsin in scoring, with 15.5 and 14.4 points per game respectively. The Badgers are in fourth place in the conference, just half game behind the Michigan State Spartans. Wisconsin will play two more conference games, Wednesday, at home against Iowa, and then on the road Sunday at Illinois.
21. Baylor Bears (22-6) – The Baylor Bears have emerged late in the season as a contender from within the Big 12. Baylor picked up their second straight and fifth win in their last six on Saturday over Oklahoma. The win for the Bears pushed them into a three way tie with Texas A+M and Missouri for third place in the conference. The trio of teams are two games behind second place Kansas State. Scott Drew’s team is led in scoring by LaceDarius Dunn and his 19.1 points per game. The Bears will finish the season with a trip to Texas Tech on Tuesday, followed by a home game with Texas on March 6th. The Bears move into the rankings, after being unranked in the previous rankings.
22. Texas A&M Aggies (20-8) – After falling on the road at Baylor, the Aggies picked up a 16 point win over Texas. The win for the Aggies kept them in a three way tie for third place in the Big 12 conference. Texas A+M, along with Baylor and Missouri are 9-5, two games behind second place Kansas State, and just a game ahead of Texas and Oklahoma State. The Aggies will face both Oklahoma schools to finish the season, starting Wednesday, at home with Oklahoma State, then going to Norman on Saturday, to take on the Sooners. Texas A+M is led in scoring by Donald Sloan, and his 18.1 points per game.
23. Xavier Musketeers (21-7) – After a double overtime win over the Richmond Spiders, the Musketeers moved one step close to an Atlantic Ten title. The Musketeers won their fifth straight, and are now tied with Temple, with matching 12-2 conference records. The Musketeers and Owls played on January 20th with Temple coming away with a 77-72 win. Xavier is led in scoring by Jordan Crawford with 20.2. The Musketeers will look to finish off the winning streak, and improve their tournament resume with a road game at Fordham on Wednesday, followed by a home game with St. Bonaventure on March 6th.
24. Richmond Spiders (22-7) – Despite going on the road and giving the Xavier Musketeers all they can handle, losing in two overtimes, the Spiders fall from # 12 to # 24. Richmond is the third team from within the Atlantic Ten to rank in the Top 25. Richmond fell one game behind Temple and Xavier at the top of the conference. Spiders leading scorer Kevin Anderson was held scoreless during the first half of the loss Sunday, but finished with a team high 18 points. The Spiders will look to finish their regular season on the right track. Their final home game will come on Thursday against the Dayton Flyers. Dayton will be coming in needing a win to pick up # 20 on the season. The final game of the regular season for Richmond will come Saturday at Charlotte, who also has 19 wins on the season.
25. Maryland Terrapins (21-7) – At 21-7, the Maryland Terrapins continue to roll along, as one of the more underrated teams in the country. The Terrapins picked up win 21 on Saturday, 104-100 over Virginia Tech in double overtime. Gary Williams’ crew pulled to within ½ game of the Duke Blue Devils, who will play at Virginia on Sunday evening. Maryland is led by Grevis Vasquez’s 19.5 points per game. The Terrapins will look to finish the regular season, continuing their five game winning streak, starting Wednesday with the Duke Blue Devils. The final game of the season for Maryland will come on March 6th at Virginia. Maryland climbs into the top 25 after previously being unranked.
