Our preview for the 2006 Houston Texans season |
The Houston Texans were the laughing stock of the NFL last season. David Carr was sacked almost as many times as he completed passes. Because of their horrendous record in 2005, the Texans were rewarded with the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and with this pick they selected defensive end Mario Williams over star studded running back Reggie Bush. What the Texans showed with this selection is that they want to establish a dominant defense to get after quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Byron Leftwich. Along with Mario Williams, the Texans also drafted DeMeco Ryans, a very agile linebacker that should help out with the run as well as in pass coverage. Houston did not only improve their defense in the draft, however, they also signed defensive end Anthony Weaver to compliment Williams. These additions should allow their defensive line to control football games; they will be able to get after the passer as well as stop the run. However, the Texans did not only improve their defense, they also helped out David Carr tremendously by picking up Eric Moulds, a solid receiver who will be a very nice compliment to the physical Andre Johnson. The Texans also showed Carr they are going to protect him better, selecting Eric Winston and Charles Spencer, who will be important additions to an offensive line in need of great improvement. While the Texans will not be a playoff team in 2006, they are building in the right direction.
