Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Washington Redskins |
Entering Joe Gibbs’s third season as head coach, the Washington Redskins are as confident as any team in the league that he can bring them back to the promise-land. Washington came one game short of reaching the Super Bowl a season ago, and were as busy as any team in the league during the off-season working to get back there. Along with game-breaker Santana Moss, the Redskins now have Antwaan Randal El and Brandon Lloyd to spread the ball to. This receiving core should make things a lot easier on veteran quarterback Mark Brunell, who is not getting any younger and is not the running threat he once was. Now that Washington has improved their passing game, things will open up for Clinton Portis as well. Portis carried the load last season, running for 1500 yards and 11 touchdowns. Along with Chris Cooley, he will also give Mark Brunell some targets to throw to out of the backfield. Not only did the Skins improve their offense, they also made some big pick-ups on the defensive side of the ball, signing a big name safety, Adam Archuleta, to accompany Sean Taylor in the secondary as well as adding Andre Carter to their line-backing core. However, the Redskins biggest signing in the off-season may have been former Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Al Saunders. Saunders will replace Joe Gibbs as the play-caller, and should lead to an improvement of last year’s 11th ranked offense. If the Redskins can have a top tier offense to go along with their dominant defense, they may be celebrating another Super Bowl in the nation’s capital come February.
