Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Oakland Raiders |
The Oakland Raiders are one of the weakest teams in the NFL coming into the 2006 season. It starts up front with an offensive line that cannot seem to block anyone. Brooks has no time to pass and LaMont Jordan has no room to run. If rookie center Jake Grove and third-year tackle Robert Gallery don’t step up their games mightily, it could be a very long season for the offense. Oakland also has a big question mark at the quarterback position. Aaron Brooks has struggled greatly the past few seasons in New Orleans and is not looking much better in the pre-season for Oakland. Another major area of concern on the offensive side of the ball is superstar wide-out Randy Moss, who is very frustrated with the offense and had just one catch in his return to the Metrodome. Things are not looking much brighter on the defensive side of the ball for Oakland. Oakland has a very weak secondary, which consists of a lot unproven players. On the defensive line, Warren Sapp hasn’t panned out the way they had hoped, and is seeing a lot of double teams that are not allowing him to get after the quarterback or plug the run. If the rest of the defensive line doesn’t start to improve, taking double teams away from Sapp and defensive end Derrick Burgess, opposing offenses will continue to cut through this defense like a knife through butter. While the Oakland Raiders don’t have much of a chance to make the playoffs in 2006, if they don’t stick together and stay healthy, they may finish with the worst record in the NFL.
