Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Green Bay Packers |
The Green Bay Packers had one of the busiest off-seasons. However, the main reason it was busy was the waiting for Brett Favre’s decision on retirement. Now that Favre has announced his returning, the Packers can focus on the task at hand…getting back to the playoffs. However, it is very difficult to see any way that the Packers would be able to get to the playoffs looking at the personnel they have. Brett Favre is nowhere near the great play-making quarterback he once was, their #1 receiver, Javon Walker, is no longer with the team, and Ahman Green is constantly fighting injuries. If the Packers offense wants to get any kind of consistency, they will need both Green and Najeh Davenport to contribute to the run game, and Donald Driver will need to step up his game and become the go-to receiver. While the Packers offense looks like it will struggle, their defense has a lot of talent and should be improved from a year ago. They signed free agent cornerback Charles Woodson, who although fought injuries in Oakland, still has the talent to be one of the premier shutdown corners in the league. The Packers also helped themselves in the draft by selecting AJ Hawk out of Ohio State. Hawk is a linebacker who has tons of speed, hits like a ton of bricks, and has the athletic ability to create turnovers. The Packers also added Marquand Manuel to their secondary at the safety position and Ryan Picket, a very good defensive tackle. If the Packers defense can come together quickly and play up to their potential, the Packers may not be as bad as expected.
