Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Detroit Lions |
The Detroit Lions were starting to become the laughing stock of the NFL in 2005. The Lions’ fans were ashamed to show their faces towards the end of the year, partly because of a struggling team and partly because of a front office they had zero confidence in. However, the Lions fired head coach Steve Mariucci and hired Rod Marinelli. Also, maybe just as importantly, the Lions hired offensive genius Mike Martz to take control of the offense. Martz runs a basketball style of offense and should be a quick solution with the loads of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Kevin Jones, who did a great job as a rookie, struggled mightily last season. And while the Lions have a great young receiving core with Charles Rogers and Mike Williams, Joey Harrington had trouble getting them the football. Now that Jon Kitna and Josh McCown are on the squad that should change. The new talent as well as new coaching should help with both the running and passing games. The defensive side of the ball mainly boils down to the secondary. The defensive line and linebackers on the Lions are both athletic and quick. However, the secondary, while it has talent, is a major question mark. The Detroit Lions are one of the biggest wild cards in the league coming into the season. They have a totally revamped coaching staff, 15 new free agents, and two new quarterbacks. If Coach Marinelli can find a way to bring this group together, things can turn around rapidly in Detroit.
