Our writers preview the 2006 season for the New York Jets |
The New York Jets, for the first time in several years, are fighting for respectability rather than for a playoff spot. The Jets had a dismal season in 2005, a season in which they lost QB Chad Pennington to injury and a season in which forced Herm Edwards to leave New York for Kansas City. The only bright spot that came out of 2005 was that it allowed them to draft a great offensive lineman in D’Brickashaw Ferguson out of Virginia. Ferguson is a very athletic and mobile LT who is versatile enough to play either guard or tackle. The Jets also selected Nick Mangold, a center out of Ohio State with their other first round pick. While the Jets offensive line is greatly improved, the quarterback position is still very questionable. Chad Pennington has had two serious injuries over the past several years and has been very inconsistent. New York selected QB Kellen Clemens out of Oregon in the second round. Clemens will not start, but will likely see playing time late in the year if the Jets struggle. While the Jets have close to no chance in competing for a playoff spot in 2006, they are headed in the right direction. They greatly improve their offensive line, selected a possible long term quarterback, improved their defensive front, and signed Coach Eric Mangini who has learned from the best coach in the game, Bill Belichick.
