2006 Jacksonville Jaguars Preview

Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville JaguarsThe Jacksonville Jaguars went 12-4 a season ago, but showed they did not belong with the elite when they got trounced to New England in their first game of the playoffs. Many believe the Jaguars were not nearly as good as their record, and unless their young offense shows signs of improvement, they will not be mentioned with the Colts as the class of the AFC South. While Byron Leftwich had a very strong season in 2005, his main weapon, Jimmy Smith, chose retirement. Now that Leftwich lacks a #1 receiver, the combination of Matt Jones, Troy Edwards, and underachieving Reggie Williams will need to greatly step up their game. Jacksonville gave Leftwich some help with their draft selections, by selecting TE Mercedes Lewis and running back Maurice Drew out of UCLA. This very talented duo should give their offense more depth and athleticism. On the defensive side of the ball, the Jaguars are very athletic and should continue to improve. With the return of injured Donovan Darius and the addition of Brian Williams at the corner position the Jaguars secondary should be very impressive. Accompany their secondary with a very fast and athletic front seven, and the Jaguars should be able to shut down any passing game in the NFL. With teams like the Indianapolis Colts in the same division, an athletic front seven and a solid secondary is the perfect combination for success. While the Jaguars might not beat out the Colts for the South title, they will defiantly be a playoff contender if their young offense can mature quickly.
