Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Atlanta Falcons |
The Atlanta Falcons, who were a major disappointment in 2005, got some much needed help in crucial positions over the off-season which should help them greatly. Their biggest pick-up was defensive end John Abraham, who will help what is already a very speedy and very aggressive defense become more suited to getting after the quarterback. Atlanta also acquired Chris Crocker who will be a nice addition to what was a horrendous secondary a season ago. The Falcons safeties were some of the worst in the league, and when they’re competing against big time receivers like Steve Smith and Joe Horn, it becomes very tough to win ball games. However, the main area of focus for the Falcons’ front office this off-season may have been on the offensive side of the ball. Michael Vick is very talented but the Falcons are still relying on their running game to win games. Atlanta addressed this problem by acquiring OT Wayne Gandy, a veteran who should help with pass blocking as well as with the run game. And while the run game was already very effective last season, the passing game was very poor. Michael Vick had a TD/Interception ratio of close to 1-1 and only threw 15 touchdown passes. This needs to change if the Falcons want to compete with Tampa and Carolina for a playoff spot. The Bottom line for Atlanta in 2006 is if they get after the quarterback and find some consistence in the passing game, they will be a major player in the playoff picture. However, if Vick continues to struggle and their secondary doesn’t improve, it will be another disappointing season in Atlanta.
