2006 Dallas Cowboys Preview

Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas CowboysThe Dallas Cowboys were the media’s best friend this off-season, signing problem child wide-out Terell Owens to play under a head coach that requires his players to do it his way or no way. Jerry Jones felt as though T.O. could give Drew Bledsoe the big time target he needed to bring Dallas back to the successes they enjoyed during their dominance of the 1990’s. Owens, along with Pro Bowl tight end Jason Whitten, may be just what the Cowboys’ offense needs to get into the playoffs. A year ago, Drew Bledsoe threw 17 interceptions mainly because of pressure forced on the immobile quarterback by opposing blitzes. This year, however, the Cowboys signed OT Jason Fabini and OG Kyle Kosier to help with the pass rush. The Cowboys also drafted another tight end, Anthony Fasano, out of Notre Dame, who should come in to help out in two tight end sets and allow Whitten to concentrate more in the passing game. If Julius Jones can stay healthy and carry the bulk of the offense, allowing Bledsoe and his great passing attack time to move, the Cowboys offense will surely be one of the best in the NFC in 2006. Another area of improvement for the Cowboys this season will be their pass defense. While SS Roy Williams is dominant in the box playing run support, he has been known to struggle at times in pass coverage. CB Terrence Newman will need to be the shutdown corner the Cowboys drafted in order to allow Williams to pack the box and play to his strength. The Cowboys biggest pick up this year, however, may have been PK Mike Vanderjagt. Vanderjagt will give the Cowboys a reliable kicker, which they have not had in a few years. Having a reliable kicker will allow Parcells to play the ball control style of offense he is famous for, which will keep the defense off the field. If this happens, and the off-season pick-ups pan out, the Cowboys may be celebrating greatness once again.
