Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Cleveland Browns |
The Cleveland Browns are the major question mark of the AFC North coming into the 2006 season. While Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are all talked about as Super Bowl contenders, nobody is giving the Browns any chance to make the playoffs. However, if Cleveland can continue to improve and Coach Romeo Crennel can get his group to come together quickly, Cleveland has a chance to be a major player in the playoff picture. On the other hand, if the Browns don’t improve drastically from 2005, especially at the quarterback position, they will undoubtedly finish last in the division. One of the major returns to the line-up for the 2006 season is tight-end Kellen Winslow, who has played in only two games since being drafted 6th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. If Winslow can stay healthy in 2006, he will help Charlie Frye out greatly. He is a big tight end who can go over the middle as well as run after the catch. Another big addition for Frye is receiver Joe Jurevicius from the Seattle Seahawks. Jurevicius will give Frye a big target that is not afraid to go over the middle. After running back Lee Suggs was traded to the Jets, Reuben Droughns will be counted on as the Browns main rushing threat along with William Green. On the defensive side of the ball, Willie McGinest will give the Browns a much needed boost to their line-backing core. McGinest is very familiar with Romero Crenell and is a guy who knows how to win. If Cleveland can mature quickly and stay healthy in 2006, it could be a very strong season for them. However, if they do not find a way to remain consistent early, they will be sure to finish last in the AFC North.
