Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Denver Broncos |
The Denver Broncos are yet again being talked about as one of the front runners to come out of the AFC West. Denver was well on their way to a Super Bowl a year ago until they got derailed on their home field to the eventual champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The biggest off-season pick-up for Denver was former Green Bay Packers wide-out Javon Walker. Walker was sidelined for the 2005 season due to a torn ACL, but is still one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Walker should give Jake Plummer some help in the passing game and will be a nice compliment to veteran Rod Smith. At the running back position, rookie Mike Bell has established himself as the current starter. However, with this dominant offensive line, any one the three backs: Mike Bell, Tatum Bell, and Ron Dayne, will all be able to do the job effectively. On the defensive side of the ball not much as changed from a year ago, and the Broncos should continue to have one of the better defenses in football. Highlighted by a secondary which includes arguably the best corner in football, Champ Bailey, and the hit-man John Lynch, this defense should be able to shut down the passing game. Accompany this secondary with a versatile line-backing core and a defensive line that can get after the quarterback and you have a Super Bowl caliber defense. If the Broncos can continue to run the ball effectively and Jake Plummer has another season with minimal turnovers, the Broncos are a very strong threat to come out of the AFC West.
