Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Buffalo Bills |
The Buffalo Bills, which enjoyed winning ways during the 1990’s, have slumped to become one of the bottom feeders of the AFC East. Buffalo made many surprising moves in the off-season, including several stretches during the NFL Draft. The Bills selected safety Donte Whitner out of Ohio State with their 8th overall pick and defensive tackle John McCargo out of North Carolina State with their 26th overall pick. However, while Whitner and McCargo may have went a little higher than expected, it is very obvious that new General Manager Marv Levy is greatly improving a defense that was ranked 29th in the NFL last season. The defense isn’t all that needs improving this season. Buffalo has gotten very poor quarterback play over the past few years, and J.P. Losman is not looking like the quarterback they thought he would. Losman will be in competition with veteran Kelly Holcomb and Craig Nall, formerly of the Packers, for the starting job. There is no clear cut favorite to win the job; the only thing clear is that whoever starts will need to lead a struggling offense with confidence. Wide-receiver Peerless Price should help the quarterback, whoever it may be. Price is a solid deep-threat and should be the #1 receiver that the Bills were looking for to replace Eric Moulds. While Buffalo probably won’t be a playoff team in 2006, the additions of Whitner, McCargo, DT Larry Tripplett and the return of MLB Takeo Spikes should greatly improve this struggling defense and put the Bills back on the right track to return to their winning ways of the 1990s.
