Our writers preview the 2006 season for the Chicago Bears |
The Chicago Bears, who had the most dominant defense in football a year ago, look to win the North again and work their way deep into the playoffs. While the Bears had a great regular season, they lost in their first game of the playoffs to the Carolina Panthers on their own home turf. If the Bears want to contend for the Super Bowl in 2006, they will need to get much more consistency from their offense. This will start with the quarterback position, a position that Chicago got no consistency from in 2005. Rex Grossman went down with an injury early in the season last year, and this forced rookie Kyle Orton to step in before he was ready. Grossman is back in 2006 which will greatly help the offense. However, even if Grossman does get hurt again, the Bears signed veteran Brian Griese to take over at the helm. The Bears also have a two headed monster in the backfield, with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson; as well as a big time wide-out with Mushin Muhammad. However, the offense will not be asked to carry this team to the Super Bowl. The Bears have a defense that is capable of holding any team in the league to under 10 points. With a great defensive line, one of the best linebackers in the league in Brian Urlacher, and a play-making secondary, highlighted by Nathan Vasher, the Bears defense could make history in 2006 and take this team to the Super Bowl.
