Our writers preview the 2006 season for the San Francisco 49ers |
The San Francisco 49ers are becoming the laughing stock of the NFL. In the past two seasons the Niners have won a combination of six games. Although San Francisco did not make any blockbuster signings this off-season, they did do a good job of acquiring talent in the NFL Draft. The 49ers biggest pick was tight-end Vernon Davis out of Maryland. Davis shattered all sorts of records in the combine, and was not only the clear cut best tight end in his draft class, but may have also been the best wide-receiver. Davis should give second year quarterback Alex Smith a versatile target with great hands that can run after the catch. While Davis will defiantly give Smith a lot of help in the passing game, Smith will also need to step up his game greatly. The 49ers are not questioning his ability publicly, but they were concerned enough about Smith to go out and sign veteran Trent Dilfer to compete for the starting job. This could prove to be an effective way of motivating Smith to the point of greatness, or it could shatter his morale and permanently hurt him. Another area of concern that San Francisco needs to address is their secondary, which ranked last in the NFL last season. If this secondary does not improve greatly against all the dominant passing attacks in the NFC West, the 49ers will finish last in the division once again.
