On Tuesday, the last of the unbeaten teams in college basketball finally fell. The Kentucky Wildcats were downed at South Carolina 68-62. This loss was just one day after grabbing the number one ranking in the lastest AP and coaches Top 25, and just after Texas lost the previous week as the number one team. With a Kansas win over Kansas State on Saturday, the Jay Hawks will look to snatch the number one spot once again. The Jay Hawks were impressive home winners of rival Missouri Monday night to extend their home winning streak to 54 games. The night of the upset only saw five games featuring a ranked team; but saw two upsets and one other close call. The Boston College Eagles upended Clemson, while Kansas State narrowly escaped Baylor. Following Kentucky and Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse and Michigan State round out the Top 5. Texas fell to six after two losses, followed by Georgetown, Duke, West Virginia and Purdue. The North Carolina Tar Heels did not make the Top 25 nor even receive a vote after losing three straight games. Roy Williams and the Tar Heels bounced back on Tuesday night, downing North Carolina State. The Maryland Terrapins and Virginia Cavaliers reside at the top of the always tough Atlantic Coast Conference. As February approaches, the conference races begin to heat up even more. The final full month of conference play will feature many key games. Teams that remain unbeaten in conference play are: Siena (Metro Atlantic Athletic), Temple (Atlantic 10), Morgan State (Mid-Eastern Athletic), Kansas (Big 12), Brigham Young (Mountain West), Villanova (Big East), Murray State (Ohio Valley), Michigan State (Big 10), Vanderbilt (SEC), Texas A+M CC (Southland), UAB (Conference USA), Oakland (Summit), Houston Baptist (Great West), Texas- Pan American (Great West), Butler (Horizon), Cornell (Ivy), Harvard (Ivy), and Gonzaga (West Coast). Wednesday features a huge SEC tilt between Tennessee and Vanderbilt, along with Villanova and Notre Dame tipping off. Thursday will also feature games with a ranked team in action highlighted by the Wisconsin Badgers invading Purdue. Those games will lead up to the weekend that sees 14 games on Saturday with Top 25 teams, and 6 more on Sunday. Saturday’s games feature Kansas State and Kansas, Vanderbilt at Kentucky, and Duke at Georgetown, while Sunday features Florida at Tennessee and Maryland at Clemson
The biggest NBA basketball news this week has been the season-long suspension to Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas. Arenas has been suspended indefinitely for a month, but received his season long suspension this week. Other news within the league, but not on the court: the United State Olympic team has announced they would like to hold their training camp in New York City, as opposed to Las Vegas in 2010. Portland Trailblazers big man Greg Oden has apologized for nude photos of himself surfacing around the internet. Oden is out for the season after fracturing his left knee cap. Also, the Phoenix Suns have mentioned trade talks for their big man Amare Stoudemire, Stoudemire appears to be on trading block for the fading Suns. On the court, the New Jersey Nets continue their historical record of poor play. New Jersey has once again lost 11 straight games, and have a 3-40 record on the season. The Nets are 26.5 games behind the Boston Celtics, by far the furthest back of any team in the NBA. Streaking the other way: The Denver Nuggets, with their seven game winning streak. With that streak, Denver has taken a stranglehold on the Northwest Division, leading the Utah Jazz and Portland Trailblazers by four games. Denver has also taken over the # 2 seed in the Western Conference, trailing only the Lakers. With 11 teams over .500 in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder at 24-20 all sit in a three way tie, just a game and half behind the eighth seeded Phoenix Suns. In the East, the surging Chicago Bulls have won three in a row and improved their postseason odds. The Bulls cannot seem to gain ground on the Cavaliers, who have won five straight games. Chicago, if the postseason was today, would play in Cleveland, for the first round of the playoffs. Behind the Cavaliers, are the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Bobcats.
With just over a week until the excitment of the Superbowl, both the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints continue their preparation for each other. With many of the “experts” picking the Indianapolis Colts, who are listed as 5.5 point favorites, the Saints seem to relish the “underdog” role. According to Sportsbook.com, 74% of the betting public is laying the 5.5 points and taking the Colts. The bettors are also expecting a high scoring affiar, as the 56.5 point total doesn't seem to pursuade player to take under. 82% of the public is also putting their money on the over. The Saints escaped the NFC title game with a field goal in overtime to edge the Minnesota Vikings. Indianapolis won both AFC playoff games by double digits to advance to the big game. The game will feature two of the best, and hottest quarterbacks in the NFL: Peyton Manning for the Indianapolis Colts threw for 33 touchdowns, while Drew Brees, a Purdue graduate, threw for 34. These two teams have played three times since 2001, with Indianapolis winning twice, and the Saints winning once. The last time these two teams played was in 2007 when the Colts blasted the Colts 41-10. Coming up this weekend, will be the Pro Bowl. Obviously players from the Colts and Saints will not play, along with several other big names. The key name that was scratched was Vikings quarterback Brett Favre. Favre, along with Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner are both set to decide their future with the NFL this off-season. In other off-season news, the Tennessee Titans fired running backs coach Earnest Byner. The move came as a surprise the Titans running back Chris Johnson, who rushed for 2,000 yards. Johnson says Byner will do well on the open market, when looking for a job. Also, New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is set to have surgery on his torn ACL. Welker hurt himself in the final regular season game. Also, as the rumor mill continues to swirl, Michael Vick has been linked several times as being sent to Buffalo and becoming the new quarterback for receiver Terrell Owens.
As the collegiate football season enters the recruiting period, several key coaching names have made big news. First, Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California elected to become the next head coach for the Seattle Seahawks. Then, to replace Carroll, Lane Kiffin, the former head coach at Tennessee took the position. Both of these happenings are happening at good times, right before the biggest recruiting period for colleges, and off-season planning for NFL teams. Kiffin spent just one season at Tennessee. The Alabama Crimson Tide picked up this years national title, after their win over Texas in the national championship game. The Longhorns finished the season ranked # 2, followed by Florida, Boise State, Ohio State, TCU, Iowa, Cincinnati, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Oregon, BYU, Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Pittsburgh - to round out the Top 15. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy got engaged to his long time girlfriend Rachel Glandoff. McCoy broke the collegiate record for wins by a quarterback. McCoy is considered to be top choice at his position in the upcoming NFL draft. Also, Tommy Tuberville was announced as the next head football coach at Texas Tech. Tuberville will replace Mike Leach, who was fired before the Red Raiders bowl game against Michigan State. Tuberville announced Neal Brown as his new offensive coordinator. Brown spent this past season at Troy. Also, the Chippewas of Central Michigan announced the hiring of a new coach: Dan Enos, the former running backs coach at Michigan State is the guy that replaces Butch Jones. Jones was hired in December as the new head coach at Cincinnati. He is replacing Brian Kelly, who bolted for Notre Dame, to fill Charlie Weis’ former position. Central Michigan finished 13-2 this season, and finished # 23 in the final AP poll.
