Player info. and NFL rookie preview for Eugene Monroe, an Offensive Tackle from the Virginia Cavaliers and the #8 pick of all the NFL football picks in the 2009 nfl draft class to the Jacksonville Jaguars. |
Number 8 Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars – Eugene Monroe (OT, Virginia)
With the eighth overall pick of the 2009 draft the Jacksonville Jaguars chose the 6’5”, 309 lbs. offensive tackle out of the University of Virginia. The Jacksonville Jaguars want to play smash mouth football and Monroe is a big part of those plans. Some scouts consider Monroe the most well rounded tackle in the draft.
The Virginia offense was inept in Monroe’s senior year, scoring only 23 times. Monroe produced 16 touchdown blocks out of that number. Monroe is the complete package with the size and strength to compliment his fundamental understanding of the position. He has quick feet that allow him to stay with his block. Monroe was a bit off the radar due to the lack of offensive firepower on the field for the Cavaliers last year, but he has the talent to be a major force for the Jaguars.
Monroe’s technique allows him to excel at both pass blocking and run blocking. He has had injury problems in college with some knees issues. He is strong at the point of attack and knows how to position himself in pass protection. He has a great defensive mind.
Monroe is a great pick for the Jaguars. His downsides include his tendency to not stay aggressive in the block, especially downfield. He can also use some time in the weight room bulking up his lower body. However, the Jaguars can fix those weaknesses with good coaching and training. His mind for the game is natural.
