It’s going to be a mighty interesting week of NFL betting action ahead. Last week, we saw just a slew of teams that were favored by at least 9.5 points, one of which, the St. Louis Rams was able to pull off a huge upset. This week, we are expecting to see some significantly closer games.
We’ll start right there with the team that the Rams knocked off, the New Orleans Saints. It was a shocking defeat for the Saints, but it’s hard to say that it was totally out of left field. They had just scored 62 points in a game and had to feel full of themselves, and the truth of the matter is that they were probably far more concerned with this week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers than anything else. The Bucs are off of a bye, but they are still a banged up squad, especially at running back. After losing the first time that these two teams played at Raymond James Stadium, the Saints are comfortable 7.5 point chalks in Week 9 at home.
We still have one double digit favorite on the board this week, but we expect this to be one of the few of its kind in all likelihood. The Houston Texans only just barely covered last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and now, they are back laying 10 against the Cleveland Browns. If QB Colt McCoy and the gang have any hope of making the postseason, this is a game that they have to win, especially knowing that there are still four games coming against the other two top contenders in the AFC North.
The Houston/Cleveland duel is one of the two battles between teams from the AFC South and the AFC North. The other game is quite interesting as well. The last time that the Tennessee Titans played at LP Field, they were laughed off of the field by those pesky Texans. Now, they have to come home to take on the Cincinnati Bengals, who really have surprised us all at 5-2 this year. If they can move to 6-2, there is a chance that they can be in first place in the division. That being said, the oddsmakers are still giving the nod to the hosts by three, the value of home field advantage.

There is a definite lack of respect for the 5-2 New York Giants right now. At home this year, they already lost to the lowly Seattle Seahawks, and they were trailing for the majority of the game against the winless (and hapless) Miami Dolphins. Now, they have to go on the road at the New England Patriots, who have now put together back to back games of fewer than 21 points scored after posting 13 straight games with 30+ scored. QB Tom Brady has to be licking his chops about going against such a young secondary, especially if DB Prince Amukamara is going to make his debut in this game. Welcome to the NFL, rook. The Giants are 9.5 point underdogs in spite of the fact that they have an identical record to the Pats, and this game features the highest ‘total’ of the week at 51.5.
Another team that really doesn’t feel like it is getting enough respect is the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has to be the early front runner for Coach of the Year honors, as he has transformed a team that couldn’t compete in a miserable division last year to one that is dominating it. The Washington Redskins were just shut out last week in Toronto against a Buffalo Bills team that isn’t exactly known for its defense. Now, it has to face off with these Niners in Landover. It seems like a bit of a trap for now, but San Francisco is favored by 3.5.
The Buffalo Bills are quietly a playoff team right now as well, as they are sitting atop the AFC East. If they can win this game against the New York Jets, they might suddenly become huge favorites to get into the playoffs after having nothing but doubt cast over them for the whole first half of the season. Remember that the Pats have already lost here at Ralph Wilson Stadium this year, and New York has been absolutely atrocious in three road games thus far on the campaign. There’s a reason why the Bills are favored by a point and a half.
All eyes will be on Sunday Night Football though, as the Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers is clearly the game of the day. These two are always just hitting each other with blow after blow every single game that they play, and this shouldn’t be an exception. The Steelers are the team really in need of this one after getting destroyed at M&T Bank Stadium in Week 1, as getting swept in the season series would be tremendous cause for concern even though they would only be a half game back in the AFC North. The oddsmakers lined Baltimore as a favorite by 2.5 when these teams met in Week 1, and now, the Steelers are 3.5 point favorites on the Week 9 NFL lines.

There are two games that are still off the board as of Monday morning that we are really going to be keeping a close eye on this week. The San Diego Chargers play on Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs, but they have to avoid looking down the road to this game with the Green Bay Packers. This might be the toughest test, save for perhaps a trip to Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day against the Detroit Lions, that Green Bay has left on its schedule. QB Aaron Rodgers and company will have had an additional week to prepare for this game, and it really could come in handy.
Finally on Monday Night Football, the Chicago Bears are likely to be decided underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. These two teams are fringe postseason contenders right now, but in spite of the fact that both are on a tad bit of a roll coming into this game, there is a much better public mojo around the 3-4 Eagles than the 4-3 Bears, especially with this game being played in the City of Brotherly Love.
