Key #1: Purdue has to prove that it can win a game on the road against a respectable foe
This has been an interesting year for the Boilers to say the least. They were beaten by the Rice Owls on the road at the outset of the season, and after that, they had no luck against the Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan Wolverines, and Wisconsin Badgers (62-17, no less!). The last game of the season, a win over the Indiana Hoosiers was the only victory on the road this year, and this is going to be a bit of a road test against a Western Michigan team that doesn’t have to travel all that far to reach Detroit. The results only seemed to get uglier as the year went on, but we keep looking back at that loss to Rice and shaking our head. The Owls were awful this year, and if Purdue comes out and plays like it did in that game, it will get embarrassed on national television by a very tricky WMU side.

Key #2: Simply put: Jordan White
It feels like every single season, there is a receiver in the MAC that puts up absolutely ridiculous numbers. This year, it is White that is doing the dirty work. He leads the nation in receiving with 1,646 yards, and he has caught a whopping 128 passes, 16 of which have gone for touchdowns. Of course, there are other receivers that can kill you in this WMU offense, but White is the one that just can’t break the game wide open against the Boilers. He’s going to get his catches and his yards, but the big plays are the ones that have to be avoided. Purdue’s defense was relatively good this year against the pass at No. 38 in the nation at 202.8 yards per game, but there hasn’t been a receiver quite like this show up on the schedule since WR Michael Floyd with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. That day, Floyd caught 12 balls for 137 yards and a TD… that’s bad news for the Boilermakers.
Key #3: Someone has to run the ball effectively for the Boilermakers
Getting into a shootout isn’t going to work for Purdue. It only scored more than 27 points in a game three times this season, and one of those games against Southeast Missouri State doesn’t count in our eyes. Against bowl teams this year, the Boilermakers only scored an average of 16.7 points per game. In fairness, Western Michigan is probably going to concede at least three TDs in this one, but either way, Purdue badly needs to take care of the football. Leading rusher RB Ralph Bolden has a knee injury that is likely going to keep him out of this one. That leaves RB Akeem Shavers to run the ball, and he only had 89 carries this year and is coming off of a concussion. QB Caleb TerBush has the ability to run the ball as well, but he had just 227 yards on the season. The clock needs to keep running if you’re trying to beat the Little Caesar’s Bowl odds with the Boilermakers, and if it doesn’t, QB Alex Carder and the Broncos are going to be flying all over the place.
