Best 2010 Heisman Trophy Odds:

QB Landry Jones, Oklahoma Sooners (Current Odds: 18 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook) – We are a little surprised by the fact that Jones’ odds haven’t come down, especially with the Ingram news breaking. This is a quality play for college football betting fans. Jones is the leader of one of the best teams in the land and if the Sooners can get past Florida State and Texas, he will have a great shot at becoming the fourth straight sophomore to win the most prestigious individual award in all of college football. As a freshman last year, Jones was quite impressive in filling in for 2008 Heisman Trophy winning QB Sam Bradford, completing 58.1% of his passes for 3198 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Jones has a plethora of talent around him at the skill positions and will be in a great position to succeed. Oklahoma will battle it out with the Utah State Aggies in what should be a romp on Saturday.

QB Kellen Moore, Boise State Broncos (Current Odds: 15 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook) – Moore’s entire Heisman Trophy campaign probably comes down to this week’s game against the Virginia Tech Hokies. Traditionally, betting on a player from a non-BCS conference is a poor idea, but with 20 starters returning to a team that went 14-0 last CFB wagering season, Boise State will start 2010 ranked #3 in the land, and it has a legitimate shot at becoming the first non-BCS school to crash the BCS Title Game. If the the Broncos run the table, Moore should get an invite to New York at the very least. Last season he completed 64.3% of his passes for 3536 yards with an amazing TD to INT ratio of 13:1 (39 TDs; 3 INTs) en route to third team All-American honors. In the WAC, Moore should once again be able to put up video game numbers.

RB Dion Lewis, Pittsburgh Panthers (Current Odds: 14 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook) – With our former third choice for the Heisman Trophy, Oregon Ducks’ RB LaMichael James getting suspended for the first game of the college football betting campaign, Lewis becomes the next most likely choice to step up amongst running backs in the nation. This man ran for 1,799 yards and accounted for a whopping 20 TDs last year. The more we look at the makeup of the Panthers this season, the more we like. U-Pitt is going to be playing a very stout defensive brand of football and will utilize the rushing game to help out new QB Tino Sunseri. This is a natural fit. 2,000+ yards isn’t out of the question. The Heisman voters will get a great first look at Lewis on Thursday night, as Pittsburgh takes on the Utah Utes.

Worst 2010 Heisman Trophy Odds:

QB Case Keenum, Houston Cougars (Current Odds 15 to 1 @ Diamond Sportsbook) – Betting on players from non-BCS schools is typically a bad idea, and this is certainly the case when analyzing Cougar QB Case Keenum’s chances this NCAA football betting season. Keenum has a legitimate chance to break the NCAA record for passing yards in a career and will probably put up fantastic numbers again in 2010. However, the Cougars’ defense isn’t going to do Keenum any favors and Houston will have to win a lot of high scoring games for Keenum to even have a chance at the prestigious award. In 2009, Keenum completed over 70% of his passes for 5,671 yards with 44 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and didn’t even get invited to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist. We like Boise State QB Kellen Moore because he is on a team that can win it all. Unfortunately, Keenum isn’t, thus he doesn’t deserve to be one of the favorites this year. Still, this is a man that could put up some ridiculous numbers this week, as the Cougs take on FCS Texas State.

QB Jake Locker, Washington Huskies (Current Odds: 8 to 1 @ Diamond Sportsbook) – Locker is seen by many to be the presumptive #1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, but the strong-armed Husky quarterback is a poor Heisman betting wager in 2010. Last season, Locker put up good numbers, but nothing worthy of a possible Heisman Trophy winner. He completed 58% of his passes for 2800 yards to go with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2009, and although he will probably put up even better numbers this year, it is doubtful that he will put up the numbers that quarterbacks like Landry Jones and Ryan Mallett will. Not only that, but the Huskies have one of the most brutal schedules in the college football betting world with road trips to USC, Arizona, Oregon, BYU, and California and a very tough out-of-conference game against Nebraska. The Cougars are up this week for one of the top Heisman contenders in the field, but we don’t particularly love his chances of getting off to a good start.

RB Mark Ingram, Alabama Crimson Tide (Current Odds: +380 @ Diamond Sportsbook) – Although RB Mark Ingram might be the best player on the best team in the country, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner has quite a lot working against him in 2010. First, only one player has ever repeated as a Heisman Trophy winner, RB Archie Griffin from Ohio State. Second, Alabama plays in the notoriously tough SEC and seven of its opponents have bye weeks the week before they play the Crimson Tide. Third, opponents will try to make Alabama throw the ball this year after the running game was so dominant (215 YPG) during the 2009 CFB betting campaign. Finally, Ingram will be pushed for carries by sensational sophomore RB Trent Richardson who averaged 5.2 YPC in 2009. Ingram carried the ball for 1,658 yards (6.1 YPC) and 17 TDs in 2009, but due to his low odds and the aforementioned factors is a player to stay away from in Heisman Trophy betting in 2010. Now to make matters worse, Ingram is going to have to miss the easiest game on the schedule against the San Jose Spartans to start the year and could end up losing a bunch of carries to backup RB Trent Richardson at the same time for the rest of the year. We are puzzled as to why anyone would make Alabama’s top rusher the favorite to win the Heisman now.

We have had the luxury of watching college football’s biggest stars for 2 straight weeks now and we can get a slight grasp of what to expect during the 2009 season. The big 3 quarterbacks of Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, and Colt McCoy were overwhelming favorites entering the season to win the Heisman Trophy after all three players where finalist in last year’s race. #1. Quarterback, Tim Tebow (Florida Gators)
Tim Tebow Current Odds To Win The Heisman Trophy: 5/2

Tim Tebow totaled 5 touchdowns in the Gators 50 point blowout over Troy last weekend. Tebow threw 4 touchdowns through the air while posting 237 yards. It is the 2nd straight week that the Gators have blown the game wide open in the first half. Tebow has actually had limited playing time with their first two games being out of reach so early in the contest. Still, the Gators look like a team that is going to be extremely difficult to stop this year. Tebow not only gets things done through the passing game, but his ability to make plays with his legs adds as a stat builder. On the year, Tebow has completed 25 of 39 passing for 425 yards totaling 5 touchdowns passing. The Gators former Heisman winner has also pounded two more touchdowns on the ground. Considering how great Florida has looked early on, it appears Tebow could have one hand on his 2nd Heisman Trophy.

#2. Running Back, Jahvid Best (California Golden Bears)

If there is going to be any player to steal the spotlight from the quarterbacks this year it will be Golden Bears running back Jahvid Best. Best like Tebow has yet to play an entire 60 minutes due to the fact California has won by a combined 91 points in their first two contests. However, Best has been extremely affective every time he has touched the ball. Best had 17 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s victory. Also, the star back caught two passes for 19 yards and an additional touchdown. On the season, Best has 281 yards and a ridiculous 10.4 yards per carry average. Best is without much debate the best running back in college football. However, it will still be a difficult task to take the Heisman away from the prominent quarterbacks in this year’s race. Still, the California offense is appearing to be a big force out west. If California continues their pace, Best has all the makings to bring home the hardware.

#3. Quarterback, Colt McCoy (Texas Longhorns)
Colt McCoy Current Odds To Win The Heisman Trophy: 25/1 (opened at 9/2)

Colt McCoy kept things rolling for the Longhorns this weekend putting together his 2nd straight 300 plus yard passing performance. McCoy was 21 for 29 and 317 yards in the Longhorns 41-10 victory over Wyoming. McCoy also has put together 5 touchdowns through the air this year with one addition touchdown on the ground. In the midst of two straight solid performances, McCoy has thrown 2 interceptions to dampen the picture. However, McCoy looks to be well on his way to another big year especially if the offense is to continue to develop throughout the year. The offense got off to a slow start in their battle with Wyoming, but was able to pull through in the 2nd half. The Longhorns will meet rival Texas Tech in a showdown next week and eyes will be on McCoy as they try to extract revenge from last year’s upset.

#4. Quarterback, Max Hall (B.Y.U. Cougars)
Max Hall Current Odds To Win The Heisman Trophy: 50/1 (opened at 15/1)

If there is anything we learned from week 1, it was there was an equally talented quarterback lined up on the opposing side of the field from Sam Bradford. Max Hall led the Cougars to the biggest upset of the year so far over Oklahoma 14-13 in the first game of the season. Hall continued to impress this weekend completing 75% passing equaling 309 yards and two touchdowns. If not for a few interceptions, Hall may be getting much more Heisman attention and the fact the Mountain West is not a BCS Conference. However if the Cougars continue to roll with their favorable schedule, Hall will continue to linger around the top of the Heisman talk. Hall threw for just less than 4,000 yards in 2008 so he can put up the numbers to be a legitimate threat. BYU will take on Florida State at home this weekend and continue to make their charge towards a BCS Bowl Game.

#5. Quarterback, Sam Bradford (Oklahoma Sooners)
Sam Bradford Current Odds To Win The Heisman Trophy: OTB

I know Sam Bradford may be out of everyone’s Heisman ballot since the shoulder injury that has the Sooners quarterback sidelined for a least another game. However, Bradford can still put up some big numbers despite missing the time. Oklahoma lost to a solid BYU team before bouncing back to blowout Idaho State 64-0. The Sooners still have a dangerous offense and they will still have plenty of time to make noise in the Big 12. If Bradford returns and can lead the Sooners to another Big 12 title, the possibility is still there depending on how the competition performs. Hopefully for Oklahoma, the shoulder will heal fast and Bradford can get the offense firing on all cylinders. Oklahoma plays a lot of tough competition this year meaning if Bradford shows out he will return to the national spotlight with ease.

The ACC Atlantic Division is up for grabs in most expert’s perception heading into the new season. Clemson, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, and Florida State all have great chances to take down the division. However, we expect one team in particular to be better than predicted. The Florida State Seminoles return a very strong defense heading into 2009. The Seminoles were also the best offense in the ACC a year ago. Quarterback Christian Ponder led the Seminoles to 33 points per game. The Seminoles will be rock solid on both sides of the ball again this season and we expect them to get another division title for the 2nd year in a row. Clemson seemingly always finds a way to fall apart. North Carolina State is a bit overrated, and Wake Forest is not the team they have been over the last few years. We encourage a big play on the slightly favorite Florida State Seminoles.

The Big Ten had a load of talented teams last year. Teams like Michigan State, Iowa, and Northwestern all had surprisingly strong seasons. The conference really displayed a lot of up and coming teams. The Iowa Hawkeyes will again be a team to watch out for heading into the season. Penn State dominated most of the season and looked like they were headed to a BCS National Championship game before being upset by Iowa late in the season. The Nittany Lions will be strong in 2009 as well. However, the team that will likely breakout from the pack will be the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State only lost one game in the conference last year and that was a great game against Penn State. Freshman Terrelle Pryor really matured as the season progressed destroying defenses with his running ability. However, Pryor actually displayed his arm in a few games late in the year. Pryor should be a well-oiled machine by the time the season kicks off and could have a breakout type season. The Buckeyes will also sport a stealthy defense that held the high power Texas offense to 24 points and nearly handed the Longhorns an upset in the Fiesta Bowl. Look for Ohio State to be just as dangerous this season on offense and not just on the defensive side of the ball.

Future Pick #3 – Who will win the Heisman Trophy?

I’m sure the vast majority of the betting world will be favoring the prominent Florida Gator’s quarterback Tim Tebow for this year’s Heisman Trophy predictions. While it may be hard to bet against Tebow and the Gators, we will look out west for this year’s Heisman winner. Texas Longhorn’s quarterback Colt McCoy has a great opportunity heading into 2009. After becoming a finalist just one year ago, the Longhorns sport another high powered offense that will likely post big numbers week in and week out. The Texas offense should be tops in the Big 12 over Oklahoma and McCoy will have the chance to put up some crazy statistics in the high scoring conference. Tebow is a great choice as well, but it is a bit harder to post superior statistics in the SEC. Not only will McCoy post the best numbers out of this year’s Heisman hopefuls, but Texas looks to have the best team in the Big 12. As always, it’s hard to win the most prestigious award in college football unless you team is performing at championship level. We take a gamble and bet on McCoy to get the job done
