It was an exciting week of football in the NFL last week. The Colts and Patriots collided in one of the most exciting games of the year with a shocking turn of events that lead the Colts to a two touchdown comeback in the final 5 minutes of the game. Throughout the entire NFL there were many more close outcomes as 8 different games were settled by a score or less, but the most interesting numbers may be 9 and 6. Soon you will see why. The home teams really shined in week 10 winning 10 of the 15 games played. Those home teams were also a solid 9-6 ATS this week against the underdogs. The home underdogs were even more impressive going 4-1 ATS in their 5 match-ups. In the favorites vs. underdog’s category the race has been pretty even all year, but the underdogs conquered for the 3rd straight week going 9-6 ATS as well. After two straight 7-6 weeks taken advantage by the under totals, scoring soared this week as the over totals stood at yet another 9-6 mark on the week. We warned last week to look out for the under totals as weather cools off and defenses become a bigger factor. However, that was not the case last week as weather did not play much of a factor throughout the league. Entering week 11 there are plenty of interesting lines to consider. Week 11 will get started when two emerging hopefuls in Miami and Carolina collide this Thursday night. The Panthers will be 3 points home favorites as they seek to get back to the .500 mark. As a whole, the home teams out favor the away teams at yet another 9-6 mark for week 11. As you can see the numbers 9 and 6 seem to be a reoccurring theme. In fact there are 6 different teams that will be favored by 9 points or more as well this week which is the most lop sided the betting lines have been in many weeks. One of the key week 11 NFL lines that jump out is the Baltimore Ravens who are the slightest of favorites when they host the undefeated Indianapolis Colts. The Colts survived last week thanks to Patriots Coach Bill Belichick’s own personal mistake to go for it on 4th down and 2 from the Patriots own 28 yard line with about 2 minutes to go in the game. The Colts will now be slight underdogs for the first time this season as they hope to avoid any letdown performances. If you happened to place a few wagers on NFL Football last week, then hopefully your action sided with the underdogs. Week 10 was perhaps the biggest week for the underdogs this season as they were 10-3 ATS this week. It was perhaps one of the biggest lop sided weeks for the favorites vs. underdogs just proving that betting on favorites is not always best. The home teams also battled back in a big way this week against the books. Home teams were 9-4 ATS against the road teams. The home teams had big expectations entering week 9 as 10 of 13 teams were favored from teams at home. Those teams performed fairly well going 8-4 straight up, but as stated before the underdogs covered the points in most of those events. The under totals had the slight edge yet again this week going 7-6 for the second straight week. We mentioned last week the under totals were something to keep an eye on as the season progresses and that will be another interesting factor to keep on your radar for week 10. Looking at the week 10 NFL lines, there are some more interesting trends of the betting lines that can not go unnoticed. One common theme we have noticed in the week 10 NFL lines is the large number of home favorites, where home teams are favored in 10 of the listed 15 games. The home teams were heavy favorites last week despite getting dominated against the spread, but the bookies show liking to the home teams again. One thing that is expected is close games in week 10. There are 6 different match-ups with lines holding at a field goal or less. Also scoring is expected to be down this week as there is not one single game over the 50 point total as the over/under totals have steadily decreased in past weeks as a whole. Possibly the most interesting game of the week is the undefeated Indianapolis Colts who will host the New England Patriots for AFC supremacy on Sunday night. The Colts are 3 point favorites against their bitter rivals and that will be a game that deserves attention for sure as both appear to have Super Bowl potential. The underdogs attempted to battle back in week 8, but still fell one game short as the favorites held the edge for yet another week at 6-5 ATS over the underdog teams. Of course that is not including the Giants/Eagles game that was listed as a “Pick Em” early in the week. The Eagles actually blew out the Giants as a slight favorite at kickoff that would have increased that lead to 7-5. Last week we warned that there were a high volume of games with heavy favorites. However, out of 5 games with double digit favorites only the Bears satisfied the bookmakers as the underdogs took a strong 4-1 ATS advantage as double digit underdogs dogs. Also, there were a ton of home team favorites last week as well. The Buffalo Bills were the only home underdog last week out of all week 8 match-ups. Those home teams held a 7-5 SU advantage which got things back to an equilibrium point after the road team’s conquered week 7. The unders took back control this week with a 7-6 advantage over the overs bettors. The under total may be something to keep an eye on as the temperatures continue to drop and defenses begin to become a bigger importance each week. Heading into and looking at the week 9 NFL spreads, the home teams will have similar expectations to dominate again. The home guys are favored in 10 of the 13 match-ups this weekend and 4 of the 5 double digit favorites are also home teams. In reference to the expected increase in defense mentioned before, there is just one total for this weekend’s NFL lines that is listed above the 50 point mark; which means less scoring will be expected as a whole. Some interesting games to keep on the radar include the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles who will be battling for control of the NFC East. The Eagles despite a rocky start this season are 3 point favorites over the Cowboys probably as a result from their huge blowout over the Giants last week. The emerging Miami Dolphins will also try to take down the mighty New England Patriots this weekend. The Patriots are showing 10 ½ point favorites, but that could be a more interesting game than most expect. Denver and Pittsburgh will take the big stage this Monday night in a battle of AFC supremacy. The Broncos suffered their first loss of the season last week, but will actually be slight favorites on Monday Night Football against the defending Super Bowl Champions. Last week should have been a profitable week for the NFL betting public as it was a big week for the favorites in week 7. The favorites were a solid 9-3-1 ATS over underdog teams as a few of the high power offenses beat up on some of the weaker teams. Over the course of the weekend the highly favored teams by 7 points or more cashed in big with a mark of 4-1 ATS. The away teams last weekend proved that home field may not be much of advantage after all going 8-5 against the home teams. Also, the over total finally broke through with a 7-5-1 mark after a few weeks of splits. However, this is the time of the year when the over usually has the edge before defenses take control during the latter of the season. As we look over the opening week 8 NFL lines, there are a few interesting game that jump out. If you like betting on home teams, the week 8 spreads may be the best week for your taste; considering there is only 1 away team favored this week compared to 11 home favorites. Another interesting fact that is obvious is the number of overwhelming favorites from this week’s NFL spreads. The week 8 NFL lines contain five games with favorites of 10 point or more and that total could easily reach to 6 if the Dallas line moves up another ½ point as they are 9½ point favorites over Seattle. A few of the close week eight lines include the undefeated Broncos who will are 3 point underdogs in Baltimore, Houston over Buffalo, Miami over New York Jets, and Jacksonville over Tennessee are all around field goal favorites. Another 3 point favorite is the much anticipated rematch between Minnesota at Green Bay. Brett Favre got the win over his former team of 16 years earlier this season, but they will be 3 point underdogs this weekend. Another close match-up to keep on your radar includes the Giants (5-2) at the Eagles (4-2) for claims to top the NFC East. Last week was not a great week for the football betting public and bookies did some damage in week 6. As we projected, the oddsmakers did their job in getting the underdogs to catch up with the favorites last week. Underdogs went a combined 9-5 in week 6 and favorites of 7 points or more went just 2-4 on Sunday. The two homedogs on the board split (1-1) and the biggest homedog in Oakland +14 vs. Philly won easily. Over/Unders split once again going 7-7 as that has pretty much been the trend all season. Of the week 7 NFL spreads, there are 5 favorites of 7 points or more and two favorites of 10 points. If you enjoy betting on homedogs then you will very much like the week 7 NFL spreads as 7 of the 11 opening lines are home underdogs. There are some interesting matchups including; the Chicago Bears who are getting 1½ points in Cincinnati vs. the Bengals and the (6-0) Minnesota Vikings heading to Pittsburgh as 4 point underdogs vs. the (4-2) Steelers. As we enter week six of the season and rundown the week 6 NFL lines, we take a quick look at how last week’s numbers panned out. The underdogs jumped back in the driver’s seat in week 5, as the favorites were 6-8. Home teams were 8-6 in week 5 and the over/unders were an even 7-7 split, as they have been most of the year. As we said they would, the home dogs showed a profit in week 5, going 4-2. Favorites still have an overall advantage this season and you can expect more underdogs to continue to catch up due to some big numbers. Favorites of 7 points or more went 4-2 and favorites of 10 points or more went 3-1 in week 5. Therefore, you can expect to see more big numbers once again the week 6 NFL spreads, making this another excellent week for underdog bettors. However, if you like the home dogs, this is not your week. There are lots of home favorites on the week 6 schedule and just two home underdogs. The only two home dogs of the opening week 6 NFL lines are the (3-1) Philadelphia Eagles, who are 14 point favorites on the road vs. the (1-4) Oakland Raiders, and the (1-3) Carolina Panthers, giving 3 points to the (0-5) Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. That’s it. The rest of the board features home favorites and quiet a few big ones. There six games on the board for week six with spreads of 9 points or more. The biggest number on the board is a 14.5 point spread, where the (3-2) Pittsburgh Steelers are 14½ point favorites at home vs. the (1-4) Cleveland Browns, who won their first game in week 5 over the Buffalo Bills. In the unanimous game of the week featuring two undefeated teams, the (5-0) New York Giants head to the Superdome as 3 point dogs, to take on the (4-0) New Orleans Saints who are coming off a bye week. The Sunday night matchup features the Falcons, coming off their drubbing of the (3-2) 49ers, as 3½ point favorites at home vs. the (3-1) Chicago Bears. The week 6 NFL spread for this week’s Monday Night Football matchup, is a 3½ point home favorite in (5-0) Denver @ (2-2) San Diego. One can only wonder how a 5-0 team is actually getting more then a field goal from a 2-2 team that has looked mediocre at best this season. Some other big spreads from the week sx NFL lines include; the winless Rams getting 10 points at (2-3) Jacksonville, the (1-4) Detroit Lions getting 13½ at (2-2) Green Bay, (1-4) Buffalo getting 9½ heading into New York to take on the Jets, who are coming off a tough Monday Night loss, and the Patriots who are 9 point favorites at home vs. the winless (0-5)Tennessee Titans.

Our quick rundown of the week five NFL spreads (which are displayed below); For the second week in a row the favorites dominated the underdogs, giving the public some confidence and making the bookmaker’s lives miserable. 10 out of 14 favorites (based on the opening week 4 NFL lines) won in week 4. Favorites were 11-5 in week 3 and 10-4 in week 4, making the underdogs overdue to cash in week 5 of the NFL season. Home-dogs did better overall on Sunday as they went 3-1 ATS. Overs/Unders were 8-5-1 ATS which continued to do damage to bookmakers. Looking at the week 5 NFL lines, you can certainly tell that the oddsmakers are aware of the favorites cashing, as 6 of the 13 week five spreads are favorites of 8½ or more and there are 4 huge favorites of 10½ points or more. The biggest road favorite in week five in the (2-2) Pittsburgh Steelers, who are giving 10½ points on the road vs. the (1-3) Detroit Lions. There are two massive 15 point favorites in the (4-0) New York Giants -15 @ (1-3) Oakland, which opened at 16 point, and the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers are getting 15 from the (2-1) Philadelphia Eagles who will be getting their star-quaterback Donovan McNabb back. One game is still off the board in the (2-2) Jacksonville Jags who are playing at the (1-3) Seattle Seahawks, where quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s status is still uncertain. The biggest home-dog of the week five NFL lines is the struggling (0-4) Kansas City Chiefs who are 8½ point dogs at home vs. the (2-2) Dallas Cowboys, who struggled in week 4 at Denver. Speaking of Denver, the (4-0) Broncos are also a home underdog as they are getting 3 from the New England Patriots. Another interesting week 5 matchup is the (2-1) Atlanta Falcons & the (3-1) San Francisco 49ers, where the 49ers are giving 2½ points at home. There are no matchups between two 4-0 teams this week. The week 5 schedule features a lot of heavily favored teams, playing some of the weaker, less-talented sqauds in the NFL. We like the dogs to prevail in week 5. We also like the unders to beat out the overs, where there are only two games with totals set under 40 points. Teams on bye this week include, Chicago, New Orleans, Greeen Bay, & San Diego. #5. WR Roddy White (Atlanta Falcons) – Roddy White became a force for the Atlanta Falcons in his 3rd season, catching 83 receptions for 1,202 yards and 6 scores. A year later in the 2008 season those numbers improved with help from one of the best rookie quarterbacks that ever stepped on the field. White ended 2008 with 88 catches and ranked 4th in the NFL with 1,382 yards. However, following the breakout season that resulted in White’s first trip to a Pro Bowl things took an ugly turn. Entering the 2009 off-season, White was to begin the 5th year of a 5 year contract worth 2.28 million for the season. However, that was not nearly good enough for Roddy, when he announced he would not return to the team until he got the type of money he deserves for being an elite NFL target. It just happened to workout for White. After days of negotiation, White was offered a contract for 6 years worth 50 million dollars, becoming the 2nd highest paid receiver in the NFL. The proposal was good enough to get White back on the practice fields immediately and satisfied for at least a few more years. However, the deal has not appeared to be beneficial to the Falcons considering White has caught just 15 passes for 119 yards through his first 3 games in 2009.  At this rate, he will be worth around $13,000 for every yard he produces for the Falcons organization.

#4. CB Dunta Robinson (Houston Texans) – Dunta Robinson was a first round pick for the Texans back in 2004.  He jumped out to an impressive start in his rookie season picking off 6 passes. The early success brought some big bucks to the Texans star cornerback.  However, Robinson has failed to repeat the success he has had in his rookie season. Robinson has had a season high, 2 interceptions since the 2004 season, and when his contract expired at the end of last season things got interesting. Robinson wanted money that a top 5 corner in the NFL would receive (around 23 million). However, Houston administration offered him just 18 million and evidently that was an insult to the young defensive back. While 5 million is a lot of money, it’s definitely not a soft proposal due to Robinson’s production in the NFL. However, Robinson held out from signing a long term contract and settled for 1 year deal making fewer than 10 million for the 2009 season. Robinson made even more headlines this season when his cleats were inscribed with the words “Pay me Rick” on the hill of the shoe. A statement aimed at Texans general manager Rick Smith. The move by Robinson to withhold from long term contract, reportedly cost the Texans cornerback 23 million in guaranteed funds.

#3. Terrell Owens (Buffalo Bills) – Owens’ contract propaganda, like his career, may be coming to an end. But, that does not take away from the multiple contract tirades that were given over the course of his career. Owens burst on the scene 1996 with the San Francisco 49ers and did not really breakout until the 2001 season. After a few pay increases and stable years, Owens became unhappy during the 2003 season and wanted to “explore his options.” The move was to land a bigger contract and that he did in 2004, when the Philadelphia Eagles gave him a 7 year deal worth 48 million dollars. Evidently the contract was not good enough. A year later after making 7.5 million the season prior, Owens openly stated that he needed a new contract “to feed his family.” After tons of controversy during his tenure with the Eagles, Owens was given a 2nd chance by the Dallas Cowboys, when they gave him a 3 year deal worth 25 million. Owens became an effective force in Dallas in lure of an elite passing offense destined for success. After posting a 1,355 yard season in 2007, Owens received another contract renewal for 4 years equaling 34 millions and more importantly, a 12 million signing bonus. While the deal was never made a public affair, it was reported the Owens requested a salary increase following the big year for the Cowboys. However, that would be the last of the salary saga for the controversial wide receiver. Owens was cut from Dallas following 2008 after internal conflict and picked up by the Buffalo Bills, where he has yet to produce this season catching just 8 passes for 158 yards (as of week 4)

#2. QB JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders) – JaMarcus Russell was selected as the number 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, but when the contract negotiations did not add up.  Russell’s career went from the highest of high to the lowest of lows. In retrospect, the holdout was simply ridiculous. Russell was offered a 6 year deal for 60 million dollar contract with a guaranteed amount of 26.5 million. However, that was not good enough for the rookie who had never stepped on the field. The lucrative part of the story was not that Russell was unsatisfied with the yearly figures, but was looking for 30 million in guaranteed money. It almost seemed like he had 28 million in credit card debt that had to be taken care of right away. The holdout lasted several weeks which was enough time for the Raiders future quarterback to miss both training camps and all of the preseason. As a result, Russell was so far behind that he played catch up for the remainder of the 2007 season, starting just 4 games. To make matters worse, Russell has yet to have any success in the NFL after demanding all the money before ever proving his worthiness. Russell currently sits ranked dead last out of all starters for 2009 with a quarterback rating of 42.4 which has included just 1 touchdown pass all year with 4 other interceptions.  In 2009, Al Davis is currently paying JaMarcus around 1.6 million dollars per touchdown pass.

#1. WR Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) – Whatever happened to proving your worth in your profession? Up until week 5, where negotiations were opened up again, the Michael Crabtree holdout was beginning to look like it could have ended up being the most ridiculous and foolish holdout in NFL history. After months of non-negotiations and each passing week of regular season action, it appeared that Crabtree was not going to play at all in his rookie season. The 49ers’ tenth overall pick in the 2009 draft was expected to be the first receiver selected in the NFL draft, but went 2nd behind Maryland’s Darius Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey and the Raiders reached a 5 year deal worth 38 millions, with 23.5 million guaranteed. However, Crabtree assumed that because of his name, he was worth more then what Heyward-Bey was paid by the Raiders.  He demanded that he get more than the 23.5 million guaranteed that Heyward-Bey received.  Evidently the 49ers have no interest in paying him that kind of money and doing so would give future rookies the impression that they can re-write the “slotting system” rules of rookie contract negotiations. So, “Crabs” and the 49ers organization haven’t reached any type of agreement after four weeks of NFL action. At this point, he has missed so much time of development and may no longer be worth the 20 million (plus incentives) that the 49ers originally offered him. Crabtree now has put himself into a foolish situation where he could miss the entire 2009 season. The question a lot of people are asking is what other team would want negotiate a deal with him for 2010 after missing an entire year of football? Even if a team were to negotiate with him, it would be unwise to offer him the type of money initially offered by the 49ers. However, the saga continues to put a bad taste on the perception of greed in the NFL. Every other division leader, with the exception of San Francisco, currently holds a 3-0 record and is also favored to win in week 4. All of the 0-3 teams, with the exception of Miami and Tennessee, are big underdogs of 6 points or more. Tennessee is actually giving 3 points on the road vs. Jacksonville and Miami is getting 3 points at home vs. the Buffalo Bills. The Monday Night Football matchup for week 4 features the (3-0) Minnesota Vikings as 3½ point favorites at home vs. the (2-1) Green Bay Packers in what should prove to be an outstanding NFC North showdown. Expect a lot more home dogs and underdogs as a whole to cash in week four as favorite/underdog ATS records tend to even out from week to week in the NFL.
