PGA Tour betting action is set to embark on its biggest four weeks of the year. The FedEx Cup starts this Thursday with the Barclays Tournament, the first of four tournaments that will determine this year’s winner of golf’s equivalent of the playoffs. The top 125 ranked golfers in the world will get a chance to compete at the Ridgewood Country Club this weekend, but the field will get whittled down to just 30 golfers that will get to play in the finale of the FedEx Cup, The Tour Championship.

The first man to clearly keep an eye on in this event is the recently divorced, Tiger Woods (+1500 @ Sportsbook.com). Woods is going to play in this week’s tournament at the Barclays just days after finalizing his divorce with ex-wife Elin, which should finally put to rest all of these other marital issues that have gotten in the way of his golf in recent months. Woods won the FedEx Cup in 2007 and 2009 and has earned nearly double what any other man has in this four week tournament in its three years in existence. However, Woods has a major issue right now, and that’s that he has been playing very poor golf in recent weeks. Tiger enters this tournament as just the 112th ranked player in the 2010 FedEx Cup, making him a bit of a dark horse, per se to try to survive in this tournament through to its conclusion.

The man in the lead right now in the FedEx Cup points standings is Ernie Els (+600 @ Sportsbook.com). Els has been leading this competition since early March, but he has missed a pair of cuts in recent tournaments and has also been on a bit of a cold run of late. The South African also hasn’t performed that well in this tournament in its history, as he isn’t even the top man from his home country in career earnings. Rory Sabbatini is. Still, Els’ wins this year at the World Golf Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational aren’t to be ignored.

The ever so consistent Jim Furyk (+1000 @ Sportsbook.com) has been on fire on the PGA Tour of late, as ten of his last 12 rounds of golf have been shot under par. Furyk has a pair of wins this year at the Transitions Championship and the Verizon Heritage, and he is almost certain to make The Tour Championship with numbers like that on his side. Furyk has never been a huge factor in the FedEx Cup, but this year could prove to be an incredible exception.

The Masters winner, Phil Mickelson (+500 @ Sportsbook.com) is the favorite to capture the FedEx Cup, though. Unfortunately for Lefty, he has yet to capture another tournament this year. In fact, he hasn’t had a Top 10 finish in an event since the middle of June and has even struggled just to make some cut lines. Mickelson has had good showing after good showing here at the FedEx Cup though. However, the elusive FedEx Cup victory is still eluding him in spite of the fact that he finished third in 2007 and second in 2009. He has earned a cool $5.7M in three years in this event.

Perhaps the best option might be The Field (+125 @ Sportsbook.com), though. A number of red hot golfers are in this bunch that are certainly ones to watch. Matt Kuchar has the most Top 10 finishes on tour this year with nine, and he ranks in the Top 25 in seemingly every major category. Bo Van Pelt is considered a huge dark horse, as he clearly has the talent to come out of nowhere just as Camilo Villegas did two years ago to challenge for the FedEx Cup title. Kevin Sutherland will be one to watch as well. He has 14 cashes this season and leads the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, which is crucial to success in all four of these tournaments, particularly the first here at the Barclays.

The 2010 PGA betting season will continue in the middle of August with yet another major championship. The PGA Championship will head to Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI for the first time since 2004, as a slew of golfers aim for one of golf’s most illustrious prizes.

The defending champion of this event is YE Yang (+8000 @ BetUS Sportsbook). Yang outdueled arguably the best golfer in the history of the sport to capture the crown on Sunday. He became the first South Korean ever to win a major with his victory at Hazeltine last year.

As for the man he beat, Tiger Woods (Current Odds To Win The PGA Championship 5 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook), he hasn’t won this tournament since 2007. However, he won the PGA Tournament in 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007. Woods hasn’t quite looked like himself since coming back from his whole episode with a ton of mistresses, but no one is going to count him out no matter what event he is entering. Woods coughed up that lead on Sunday last year, which was an incredible shock considering his records going into the final day of a tournament, particularly a major, in his career.

Keep a close eye on Padraig Harrington (Current Odds: 33 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook) as well. Harrington won the PGA with Tiger on the shelf in 2008, cashing in at Oakland Hills Country Club. The Irishman won three majors from 2007 to 2008, but he hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2008. Still, Harrington is going to be a danger, particularly if the scores end up staying a bit closer to par than most would expect. Historically, Harrington is one of the coolest customers on the circuit, and he should be able to keep a level head if the playing conditions get worse at Kohler.

The rotating tournament location for the PGA Tournament might play right into the hands of Vijay Singh (Current Odds: 80 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook). He was the last man to win this tournament when it was at Whistling Straits. It was his second PGA Championship, with his first coming in 1998. Singh will be the only other man in the field aside from Woods to say that they he has won this title more than once in his career.

There are some other former champs in this field as well, but none are more notable than Phil Mickelson (Current Odds: 10 to 1 @ BetUS Sportsbook). Lefty captured the title at the PGA while playing at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey in 2005. He already has a major title to his credit this year after capturing the Green Jacket at August National in the Spring. Mickelson is the second choice on the board to win the 2010 PGA Championship, and for good reason.

Americans had won all but two of these events from 1996 through to 2007, with Singh being the only non-American to cash in. However, since that point, both Harrington (Ireland) and Yang (South Korea) have found glory.

The famed links of St. Andrews will be on display starting on July 15th, as a host of golfers look to beat the British Open odds to capture the 2010 Open Championship. This tournament has been at St. Andrews on a rotation since 1873, and this was the first site of this illustrious event aside from the Prestwick Golf Club.

The defending champion of this event is Stewart Cink (+6500 @ Sportbet / 100% Bonus if you click here). The ageless wonder, Tom Watson (150 to 1 @ BetUS / 100% Bonus using this link) held a one shot lead going into the final day of the event, but it was Cink that made a charge from three shots back to open the day to post a -1, 69 to get draw level and force a playoff. The four holes played between Cink and Watson was really never close. Cink won the first hole by a stroke and really put everything away at Hole 17, where Watson triple bogeyed and fell out of any sort of contention at Turnberry.

The great Tiger Woods? (+4½ to 1 @ Brobury / $100 Free Play with this link) has been the only man to win the British Open here at St. Andrews since 1995. Tiger captured the event in 2005 at -14 for his first of two straight Open Championship titles, while he won here on the Scottish links at a whopping -19 in 2000. Woods won the ’00 Open Championship by a whopping eight strokes. It was the third largest margin of victory that Woods has had in his career, and the biggest margin he has had since winning the 2000 US Open by 15 shots. There hasn’t been a heck of a lot of success for Tiger on British soil since the ’06 win at Royal Liverpool, though. He finished 12th in 2007, didn’t play in 2008, and missed the cut for just the second time in a major since 1996 here last year.

2007 and 2008 winner Padraig Harrington (20 to 1 @ Brobury) is going to inevitably be a crowd favorite here at the Open Championship as well. The 38 year old Irishman had a fantastic run from ’07 to ’08 in which he won three major championships, including two here on British soil. If you want to talk about hit or miss though, Harrington is certainly just that. He finished 65th here last year, and missed the cut in two of the three previous British Open’s prior to his two victories. However, Harrington is never one to count out of this event. He trailed by six shots through 54 holes in the ’07 Open Championship only to win in a playoff over Sergio Garcia. He was two shots back on Sunday in ’08, only to go on to win by a whopping four strokes.

The two other major winners from 2010 will be in this field as well. The Masters champion, Phil Mickelson (12 to 1 @ BetUS) is the second choice on the board to take down one of the most illustrious titles. Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell (30 to 1 @ Brobury) has a significantly lower odds for this British Open than he did in his 2010 US Open championship, when he cashed in at +8000.

What would a golf major be without talking about Tiger Woods? The man that won the ’10 Green Jacket was Phil Mickelson (7 to 1 at Bet US Sportsbook). After not being able to win “the big one” for a good chunk of his career, Mickelson has now won three Masters Tournaments. However, his career at the US Open isn’t exactly one to be proud of. He has three Top Tens in the L/5 years, but he also has six lifetime finishes outside of the Top 25.

The Players Championship at Sawgrass in Ponta Vedra, FL started on Thursday afternoon, and plenty of questions surround the event.

The most notable is how Tiger Woods will do following his missing the cut with two brutal rounds of golf at the Quail Hollow Championship in his most recent appearance. Tiger’s most recent round of golf before coming to the TPC at Sawgrass was that woeful 79 at Quail Hollow in Round 2. Many felt as though Woods, who was only playing in his second event since returning to the course from his domestic disputes, was rusty and/or showing signs of decay in his game. However, no such rust was evident in the 2001 TPC champ in Round 1 on Thursday, as he shot two under par to finish the day four shots off of the pace.

That pace has been set by relative unknown J.B. Holmes and Robert Allenby, both of which fired -6 66s on the day. Holmes has only won on one golf course in his career on the PGA Tour, with that coming at the FBR Open. It’s a tournament that he has won twice, once in 2006 and once in 2008. Allenby, a veteran on the tour, hasn’t won an event since the 2001 Marconi Pennsylvania Classic. He has four career tour titles.

Eight golfers, including Kenny Perry, are tied at -5 for third place. There were 103 golfers that shot par or better on a day in which scores were very low at the TPC.

Phil Mickelson has an opportunity to become the #1 ranked golfer in the world if he can win this event, and he has gotten off to a great start as well, shooting a two under par to be tied with Tiger and a host of others in 37th position.

Last year’s champion of this event, Henrik Stenson shot a -3 69 to finish Round 1 in a great position just three shots off of the pace. There aren’t many multiple time winners at the TPC, as there are only five golfers that have ever pulled off the feat. Jack Nicklaus is the only man that has won three tournaments here at the TPC, while Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Davis Love III, and Hal Sutton are the others. Prop Bet #2: Will Tiger Woods Make the Cut: Though we just spent some time talking about how Tiger may be off of his game and such, let’s also keep in mind that this is still Tiger Woods. All this man ever does is make cuts. Remember that this was once a man that made a whopping 142 straight cuts. That’s right. 142 of them. At the time, it was 29 cuts more than the longest cut streak ever (113 by Byron Nelson from 1941-48), and the longest streak of cuts made from that point by any other golfer at the time was Ernie Els with 20 straight. Woods also had a streak of 39 straight major tournament cuts made before failing to make it to the weekend in the 2006 US Open. However, it’s hard to fault a man who had literally just returned to the golf course following the death of his father. Since then, he has only missed one other major cutline, that coming in the ’09 Open Championship. No matter whether Elin is there to egg him on or not, it seems hard to believe that Woods isn’t going to be within ten shots of the leader(s) following two days of play at one of his favorite golf courses.

Prop Bet #3: Will Tiger Woods finish in the Top 20: It seems to be a bit chalky, but it’s hard to go against Tiger in relation to the Top 20. Sure, the cutline is a possibility for Tiger, which would immediately make this prop a loser after just two days, but we’re still talking about a man that has only finished outside of the Top 20 once at Augusta since 1997. In four major events last year, Woods finished tied for sixth twice and runner up at the PGA Championship in addition to the aforementioned missed cut at the Open Championship. If Woods does not win this week, it would be the first time since 2004 that Woods did not score a major championship during the year. Phil Mickelson had to take some time off and missed out on the British Open due to his wife battling breast cancer. Mickelson has returned to action, but his game seems to show the time off as his has not been at his best.
